The Masters 2023 (*** NO LIV RELATED CONTENT ***)

In the world of sports there are but a certain number of events which transcend the game and resonate not only with those who pass their time concerned with the peaks and troughs of their favourite team or players but also with those that would might know who Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi and Michael Jordan are but have no idea who Patrick Cantlay, Harry Kane or Scotty Pippen are. Football, depending on your definition, has the World Cup or the Super Bowl, Tennis has Wimbledon and Golf has The Masters. Whilst there will no doubt, forever, be discussions between golfers as to which is the best of the great championships to win, the timing of those other majors - June and July (I know I didn't include May) - pushes their relevance down a notch. Come April those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are more than ready to climb out of the slumber that the autumn and winter months bring, eager for the new beginnings and warmer climes that spring will provide and a figurative, for most of us, trip down Magnolia Lane is just the tonic we need to remind us that those days are almost with us and as I type this and get ready to post it, I can say that those days are almost, so very nearly with us!!

As we head to Augusta any number of storylines is ready to grab our attention. The first three months of the year have seen three of the best and brightest in our sport vie for the title of number 1. Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and current incumbent and defending Masters champion Scottie Scheffler have all had time at the top of the world so far in 2023 and it would be a brave man to suggest that anyone other than those three will reach a similar height before the end of the year. Whilst Rahm has cooled from his electric start to the year, McIlroy and Scheffler both come in near to the peak of their powers and a win round Augusta would boost their #1 credentials. McIlroy of course has the added attraction of the career grand slam. How ironic it is that the Masters, the major he really should have won first, remains the one which has alluded him? If he can claim the green jacket this year he would join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nickluas, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as being the only individuals to have triumphed in each and every men's major championship. There is also the intriguing sub-plot of the return of the LIV golfers. Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson (Par 67) DeChambeau and others will mix it with the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa for the first time since July of last year. The reception and play of those former PGA Tour stars will be certainly garner much in the way of comment and in truth no one knows how they will play. The one certainty is that irregardless of anything and everything we can talk about heading into the week, the one thing we can be sure of is that there will be drama and excitement, triumph and catastrophe all mixed with just enough unpredictability to keep us going and talking until April 2024. This'll be an interesting one for me as instead of being camped out on the couch for 4 days ... I'm gonna be on the road with the band. 

 

On one hand, it's kinda perfect since I'll have all the time in the world to watch since we'll be traveling. On the other, I hope my 5G hotspot holds up! (Thankfully all travel those 4 days is east on I-40 ... so it SHOULD be ok.)

Where are you playing? I drove 5 hours a couple of Saturdays ago to see an act called Tall Tall Trees play something called "Banjo Funk Americana" in a venue that seated about 30. Would certainly drive much further to hear you!
