I'm about your age and play the 9* g400 max with the Tour 65X. Great driver. Long enough and helps keep me out of trouble.

That other site that does all of the testing claims that the MAX is quite a bit fade biased. I believe others have as well. I would tend to agree.

  • 1 year later...

Well, 3 years later and it's still in the bag and I still love it.  I settled on an Attas 4U shaft a couple years ago and for me the G400 Max with the Attas is absolutely magic.  I tried the G425 Max a couple weeks ago and I think it sounds pretty bad (and that's saying something, you know, considering I play the 400 Max) and I just flat out hit the 400 Max better.  I've bought quite a few drivers in the last couple years, but nothing has even come close to being as good, so I sold all of them recently.  I've grooved a nice little cut with the 400 Max and all is very, very good.  I also put an Attas 4U 7TS in my G25 4 wood and it's also a magic club for me now.  Not sure what it is about that shaft, but it just works for me.  I'll probable put an 80 gram version in the Epic Flash 7 wood I just got from CPO.  Lord knows that wimpy little Even Flow green 55 ain't gonna hold up.

How many of you guys still have your 400 Max in the bag 3 years later?  Mine's definitely not going anywhere anytime soon.

2 plus years. Aldila Xtorsion copper S, the thing is a fairway finder unless I get tired (like today). Last week hit 11 out of 14 fairways, today was 10. And it was a pretty spotty swing day. Can’t really talk my way into spending a bunch of money for likely no gain. Besides, if 8 want to waste money, putters are a fine money pit…

Seems there are two main populations on GolfWRX - those that are playing blades and persimmon woods (or the metal equivalent), and those that change drivers whenever they change underwear. Or wives, whichever comes first.

Heres my thing about the G400.  EVERYONE who has used it says its the best driver they have used in years and how much they love it.

If thats the case, why would you ever change it out for something else unless its just out of pure boredom and you have a random $500 burning a hole in your pocket.

If you hit it that well why would you get something else?

Pretty sure you answered your own question there. 😅

Also the inconsistencies of the amateur's game can lead you to believe that while it WAS the best ever, maybe there is something better, when in reality it is just our personal and physical failings. 😆

I get it, I just don't understand it. The G400 Max is essentially the best driver ever produced in the last decade. It better than the Epic, Maverick, Rad Speed, ect. and nearly everyone agrees on this.

If you hit it that well, why aren't you gaming the G400 Max for the next decade. 90% of this board should be hitting the G400 Max still right now since it's that good.

People love to just spend money for no reason I guess lol Maybe I'm just a amateur golfer idk.

The concept of "Oh man I bomb the G400 290 yards dead center every since time, best driver ever made---but I just bought this new Cobra Rad Speed for $600 check it out" makes ZERO sense to me.

Was in an M4 which I thought was good but can lose control. Bought the Sim 2 and was all over the place. Gave it to a friend and he loved the Sim 2. He told me to try his Ping. Had no idea what model and really no interest. A few days later we played and I hit the range with it then played a round. It was the g400 Max. I could not miss the middle if I tried. It truly is unbelievably forgiving. Best downward trade I've ever made.

I remember taking my G400 Max with me on a golf trip to Arizona years ago--crazy how long this driver has been out there and top of mind.  Anyway, I never really got totally dialed in with the G400 Max--I suspect a proper shaft fitting would have done wonders with it.  Put my 10.5* in my son's bag, and still have my 9* around.

For my swing, the G400 Max always needed a bit of draw bias help in the heel.  I played the Mavrik last season, then the Epic Max and Max LS this season.  All great drivers, and really love the Max LS.  I just recently came across a used G410 Plus 9* with Tensei Orange stiff, and said what the heck.  Put the weight in the heel, playing at +1, and really loving this combo.  I may even go to the flat setting to reduce the draw bias a bit.

There is something special about Ping drivers to me, and I really don't see all that much difference in forgiveness between the G410 Plus and the G400 Max.  I've demo'd the G425 Max, and could not really tolerate the sound on that one.

G400 Max legendary, but subsequent Ping drivers not too shabby in their own right, and simply more ability/settings to dial things in.  YMMV.

Making a change is not in any way taking away from what the G400 Max can do.  It's a great driver.  For me though, the crown is busy and the sound isn't the best so if I find something that looks better and sounds better while also adding solid performance, it's getting a shot in my bag.  I have more time to put in with the Mav but my last round was the best driving round I have had in a REALLY long time.  It feels great and the sound is so much more appealing.  On top of that, I have seen faster ball speeds with the Mav by a couple MPH.  Maybe its just a better fit?  IDK, but all over the face, the Mavrik is impressive.  I will hold onto the Max for now, I can deal with the look and sound if things with the Callaway go wrong, but I have a good feeling about this one.

Right on, but trust me Im not a big G400 honk. I have one, been using it all year after being told its the greatest driver. I dont get where people say its 'super forgiving' and is a 'fairway finder'. For me, I still slice and mishit it just as bad as I did my RBZ driver before that--but thats just my swing being terrible. When I do make good contact with it though it goes for miles.

You talking about the regular G400 head or the Max?  You're right though, it all comes down to strike and swing.  Nothing is fool proof... as amazing as my Mavrik has been, I have still lost a couple here and there but overall, it's been great.  My G400 Max is really good too, I have hit some absolute bombs and typically hit between 6-10 fairways a round with it... driver accuracy has not been my strength over the recent years.

I was fit for the TSi2 earlier this year and during that time, the G400 Max was my gamer.  The numbers were just about the same between the two, with the ball speed going to the TSi2 by 1 or 2 mph.  Forgiveness still marginally better with the Max.  It's an amazing offering by Ping, it will be hard for them to top IMO.
