PGA tour players not lifting a ton of weights and gaining a ton of speed and Scott Stallings not gaining a ton of speed going from fat to fit(yet he doesn’t train for absolute muscle strength output, but for muscular endurance and health) is LICC’s entire argument.

Just saw some tv footage of Bryson on TV, he looks sloppy fat. I can definitely see a 25lb gain but it looks like more than half of that is fat. Different people bulk up differently, but from what i can tell, that is definitely not the type of bulk that 100m sprinters put on when getting stronger

It is mostly fat, food and water weight with a little bit of muscle. Takes years to pack on substantial muscle gains.

Ok not to get in the way of a good argument but if he does get stronger he can now have a heavier shaft and more mass in the club, that when swung at same speed would result in increased distance.

Pure mass, whether it be fat or muscle, can help with swing speed as long as you still have sufficient strength to apply the same torque to the club via rotation. The extra mass increases the frictional force with the ground. If Bryson felt he was being limited in this area, i.e., he was starting to lose grip with the ground, then adding mass would help without him resorting to squat loading into the ground (lots of smaller, lighter players do this for sure).

Really good observation. To a certain extent, being heavier is good. Easier to transmit power, you will have a better anchor in the ground and the mass of the club won't destabilize you at higher speeds as easily perhaps. I like to grab a club and go swing barefoot or in socks in my garage. Dangerous that is, and I am also significantly slower. I did a little experiment one time, ball speed in socks vs ball speed with shoes. Difference was 10 mph.

Don't let basic physics get in the way of this  …  calculate how much extra mass would be needed in the club to increase distance if swung at the same swingspeed  …  hint  … he'd have to be swinging a sledgehammer to significantly increase distance.

I think it's cuz he finally went to a 7 iron length driver. Now that he only has one swing and length to work on, he hits sweet spot every time and also refuses to buy (Puma hates him) new polo shirts so that they are one size too small, just to show off the guns.

If he went from a 200g driver head to 220g driver head, all else being the same, he'd pickup ~3mph in ball speed, which would be good for 5-6 yards of carry. Not uncommon for modern clubs to be built with counter-balanced shafts so you can add head-weight while keeping SW the same to squeeze out some extra ball speed.

Is it just me or does this seem bass-ackwards? A strong core should support the back, spine, posture.

You were the one who said it was basic physics and asked someone to calculate the delta, I did. If you don't know how to calculate it yourself, how can you so confidently make the claim head weight makes no impact on final ball speed?

 

Assuming 8* of spin loft (aggressive, I know), the theoretical max smash factor for a 200g head is 1.473. For a 220g head it goes to 1.499. At higher club head speeds that delta can become significant. Part of the reason pros hit it further than ams is they not only hit the middle more often and swing it faster, they also typically play a heavier head than what is at retail.

Another reason why listening to a lot of what he says is him trying to play up he scientists schtick. Strong core isn’t a cause of bad back. Weak core which is way more than just abs are good for the back
