He did get a lot of shit for it but he also knew what he was doing with full expectation of the penalty. He said precisely that in the interview after the round.

Haha I TOTALLY did that yesterday when my buddy had a tough greenside bunker lie.

"I'm watching you, Pat. Don't do it."

If anything, it makes the Cup that much more difficult to watch, since now we’re going to have to hear about it all week. I can only imagine the face-palm Tiger is doing, having to deal with the distraction.

This is the closest to my take. Overall, I find it a bit overblown. Not to defend Reed, I do not like/dislike him and really don’t understand the obsession the media has with his family life, but being a professional golfer which by and large means someone intellectually challenged, his camera angle explanation doesn’t strike me as an outright lie, it is just a dumb way of explaining after the fact what he did with obvious “natural” action. But the “camera angle” was only part of his explanation. If you listen to what he had to say to the media immediately after it was more about his routine that he is careful not ground the club anywhere near the ball, he was about 4-5 inches behind the ball and to him that is far enough not to worry about improving his lie. Take this together with the coverage in real time with Azinger’s commentary, no one noticed this “shoveling” going on and how much sand was moved. The closeup replay is a bad look for sure. So it makes you wonder, what kind of idiot would even put themselves in a risky position to create doubt / controversy? I guess PR is that kind of idiot and when called on it he took his penalty; the dumb explanation afterward is kind of irrelevant at that point other than to show his way of thinking is pretty messed up. For those jumping on him that he is not admitting it, I don’t know what you want, he clearly says by way of the video reply “I touched the sand” so that’s a penalty. He says there was no intent. Good enough for me, back to carrying on with life and the opinion of PR one way or the other really doesn’t change. Yes, he is a lightning rod for criticism, and arguably deservedly so, but does that make him a “cheater” for the rest of his career??? Hardly. For all we know, he has done this on countless bunker shots just as many pros have “cheated” in countless ways for years.

Every once in awhile you get a comment on it from a Kip Henley, Mickelson, undercover tour pro, et cetera...there is lot of “cheating.” How much? Who knows? What was that anonymous survey done last year with a wild contradiction? 44% of PGA Tour Pros said they witnessed cheating but 100% of them have never broken a rule and did not call a penalty on themselves. Huh?

I want integrity in the game, especially at the PGA Tour level, but wake me up when it is obvious someone actually gained an advantage on the field and it paid off. Only one I can think of where this is proven is VJ on the Asian tour. Pencil whipping the field to make a cut...now that’s pretty bad. But even VJ paid his dues on it.

If he is a blatant cheater then why doesn't anyone call him out on what he does? For a discussion about cheating and integrity of the game, what about the responsibility of the players opponents not calling it out???

Dude is caught breaking a rule, accepts the penalty, and should be banned? Why not just make the penalty for all infractions a ban from the game, so only the players that show they have the highest level of integrity for the game are the ones playing.

....imagine if there was an individual camera for every player that followed them around without them knowing. I'd bet all the marbles Patrick Reed wouldn't be the only player being called a cheater in this thread.

Not sure how it is enabling when he was caught and dealt with...is he supposed to get suspended now? We know the Tour doesn’t do that. Now if he the dummy does it again and gets a penalty then sure, suspend the guy because the lack of “intent” excuse is out the window. I just find it really hard for people to separate the incident from their predisposed hatred of Reed as made obvious in this thread. PR is an idiot; time will prove out what is in store for him.

Reading is such a challenge. Watch the coverage, as I pointed out, no one said anything in real time, all Azinger talked about was what he was facing, and the shifted to how the shot was unlucky as it rolled down the slope. Later, upon close up does the conversation shift to the sand moving. And as I pointed out, the close up was a bad look for him. Pretty obvious at that point sand was moved, and even PR had to admit as much, which he did...along with his excuses. So I am not making excuses for him. I don’t need to make excuses for PR, or PM when he looked like an idiot as well as the US Open, or Sung Kang, or Kuchar, or the putter anchorers, or anyone else coming under the ire of the public - seems to me they all get dealt with as needed and the game survives just fine.

I didn’t say lots of guys do it, so again, reading problem. I did say the tour has a problem with cheating as reported by many on the tour and around it. But what is the tour doing? Nothing other than handing out strokes and DQs where they pretty much have to do it. Even Slugger himself said he didn’t see a reason to confront PR until after the round since it was only R3. Guess in his mind there was no DQ to talk about...

My original comment about “wake me up” when there is obvious advantage is meant as a comment that this whole PR controversy is blown way out of proportion given the tour officials dealt with it, so to them matter is closed, tournament goes on. Not even the tour can be bothered to make a big deal about it and they didn’t even seem to care about the same thing happening years ago. If people care about integrity and cheating, don’t get mad at PR, get mad at the PGA Tour for all the coddling they do for players.

Im callin him out. I guess its a hard thing to “prove” because you have to prove intent. Unless he Said what he was doing before hand, good luck doing that. But its PAINFULLY OBVIOUS what his intent is. Dont be rediculous about banning every infraction. He got caught, he LIED. Even more damming evidence hes a cheat. Maybe the tour players should know a camera is on them at all times. They are playing for a crap load of money, and technically this could be looked as stealing from another player. He needs to go.

For the longest time, I thought that Reed was like one of those guys in team sports...if he played for you, you loved him if he was on the other team that you hated him, now though, I am not sure that anyone with any sense is wanting him on their team.

I've always defended Reed as I like how he's a little different and I've always found him good to watch but this was bad. I see there is footage on Twitter from 2015 and he does the exact same thing with the sand but he obviously got way with it then as the camera wasn't as close in.

This is also what I was thinking. First of all, if you're going to cut corners in a tournament, no offense to the host, but this is not the tournament to chose. And, more importantly, Tiger took a chance in bringing you on as an alternate in the PC, after the RC debacle, and this is how you show your appreciation? Wow.

Integrity is a lost virtue in this day and age. The whole "if you aint cheating you aint trying" mentality is sadly how a lot of people think in this day and age. Bobby Jones would not have been impressed.
