OK, i've posted a few times about various irons lately. I use Ping G410s currently, mostly because every now and then i like playing SGI's just so i can tell frenemies like my boy @bladehunter that you can play well with big fat ugly clubs (i'm joking blade, you know i love you!)

But then every couple of years i go back to a forging of some sort, something big enough to give me a bit of forgiveness but that still feels nice, and helps me fit in better in my interclubs and mid-ams. Prior iterations of this include 2016 Apex pros, and 2015 JPX850 Forged.

I want new irons. I don't NEED new irons i just want them. I also can't get fit because of Covid. This is a luxury purchase. Please don't tell me to get fitted. This is a luxury purchase. I basically have it narrowed down to:

1) Callaway Apex Pro '21: I feel like these are too small for me. I'm a little concerned about playing the 4-5 irons.

2) Srixon ZX5/7 combo set: They look nice, but not crazy about the ZX5 loft bunching at the bottom, they have 3 irons in a 4 degree gap. Plus no gap wedge in lefty....ehh. Not good

2) Mizuno JPX921 SEL: Seems to make sense on paper. Loft spacing is nice. Forgiveness in the long irons and a gap wedge in lefty

3) TMAG P770: These are my favorite right now. I hear they are slightly bigger than the Callaways. They look really sexy with the blade-ish design...And TMAG has the best shaft offering, for example i really want to try Modus 130s and they are a free shaft with the P770s

So basically....Can anyone convince me not to get the TMAGs?

You have 24 hours.

Hey !! What are you talkin aboot!? ( I kid I kid )

heck.  I’ll be the enabler !!  I can spend someone else’s money like nobodies business.     I’d go with the TM irons.  Especially if you can get the modus 130. Which happens to be my favorite shaft !

I agree Jeff that they are smooth looking irons.  Although I haven’t had a chance to hit them. I do however know that their resale is still strong , so you don’t stand to lose too much if they don’t work out.  So that’s where my vote goes.  770s with modus 130.

The P7MC are REALLY nice irons. You could do 8-PW in those for a beauty combo.

This is the correct answer. IMO the P770 just looks a lot better than the 921F and isn’t going to be any harder to hit, and I’m coming from playing 900F. 8-pw in the MC has been great for me, distance control is incredibly consistent.

No testing, just going on looks, it’s Apex. I think Mizuno have lost their wow factor in aesthetics recently.

Those smaller heads focus the mind!

Thanks, to be honest the thing that really has me hooked is the free Modus shafts. I believe they are the only one who offers this.

I really want to try the 130's , have hit them briefly as part of a fitting and liked them

Plus the P770s look really nice, and a "big" blade has been a long time want for me. I actually asked Scratch golf to make me a set for my wedding present, but the lefty thing was a bad fit for them

I fit 100s of golfers in 17 years as a former Golf Town Certified Fitter and the dominant trend in the last three years has been to lighter shafts. I know that that the DG S300 is similar in weight but leaping to the Modus without a fitting is a gamble. OTOH, I recommend going to the 921SEL.

Personally I would look at the Srixons and just get something different for the longest iron (or their utility iron if it fits the gap) or the apex pros.  I’ve just been kind of into the idea of a brand agnostic mess of a bag that could potentially include different brands for the short/mid/long irons.  I realize that would not work for a lot of people though, as they just couldn’t look at it.

I like the look of the apex pros better than the p770’s but that’s just opinion/aesthetics.  I also like the xforged and those are not everyone’s cup of tea.  I would not want a 5 iron and possibly 6 iron in the apex pros or 770’s but there are good combo options if you also wanted some more help with the longish irons (coming from g410’s I would think a little long iron help would appeal but that’s just me assuming).

My suggestion is you get a hodgepodge and really give the guys that can’t stand to look at your g410’s OCD overload.  Srixon 3 utility, ping g425 4,5, tmag p770 (ormizuno jpx 921 forged) 6,7 and srixon zx7 8-p.  It would be gloriously ugly/beautiful in the bag!  Man, I want to get myself something like that now...

I am currently playing a 410 4 iron, and i210 5-PW.  I cannot stand overly large iron heads, or overly long iron heads.  Similarly I narrowed down my initial search to some of the same, then I got to hit them outside and my mind was pretty made up.

1) Callaway Apex Pro '21: - Turf interaction was good, 4 and 5 iron I AM NOT A FAN of.  I want to check the regular Apex for the 4 and 5.

2) Srixon ZX5/7 combo set: I hated the 65 series.   Refused to try the 85 series because of that.  However the 3 and 5 and maybe 6 in the ZX5 and the rest ZX7 has me drooling.  Did I hope for more graphite options with some heft?  Yep, which has me holding off for now.  I have put my old reliable recoils into too many heads, and want to try something new, like the MMT in 105 or 120.  The 3,4,5 lofts are too close for me, so skipping one.  The 3 iron may be the ZXU

2) Mizuno JPX921 SEL: Dear god when it is wet myself and Mizunos do NOT get along.  Their turf interaction was the worst for me, I have hit mizunos during the summer and they are fine, but wet?  Not so much.

3) TMAG P770: I hate big iron heads, especially in the mid irons.  I can deal with a 4 or 3 iron with some heft, but not the shorts.  As I say that the P770's were smaller than I like.  No chance I use the 4 or even 5 iron in these, the 6 is smaller than I would really like.  However having owned P790's and being a high spin player they worked

I really might need to flip a coin between the top 2 sets here. I appreciate a lot of the feedback

For whatever reason i really want the P770s, they are a bit of a departure from what i've done in the past (never played TMAG, can try out some new shafts i liked at a fitting...They are sexy)

The long irons might be a bit challenging....Less so with the Mizunos.

You have 24 hours.

Just going to through a random flag pool towards your tire... Have you tried the new Cobra MIM irons? I know they aren't listed, and it's a random selection, but I feel like they might hit the sweetspot for you.

I haven't hit them, but have heard they feel amazing... and their design is more GI than blade... You could get an orange Bryson hat and call yourself Rickie DeChambeau! (ok, maybe don't do that part)...

I guess my thought is: You've played the 410s for a bit and seem to have good results with them, and I get the desire to chase a new shiny object... so the question is: Why limit yourself to five options? Dive into the pool. Try anything made in left handed.

If you know you won't change for a bit, spend the time and get it done right.

Cobras not available lefty (the MIMs)

I did check those out and they look sweet, if i'm wrong about the lefty thing please correct me!

I'm open to other suggestions if they are along the lines of a forged club that is at least moderately forgiving. The ones in the OP seem like popular choices.

I suppose the I500 would be another one but they are a bit older and to be honest i just haven't heard good things about them

When I was a young teenager I had an uncle who was a gun nut.  He had a little single action Ruger .22 (“Bearcat”?) and I craved one too.  My father who was not a nut of any sort that I know of suggested the Ruger was essentially a toy and that if I wanted a .22 handgun, a HiStandard auto loader was more functional.  Since he was paying for it (as a present to me) and I valued his advice the Hi Standard appeared in due course.

I always regretted it and wished that I had held out for the “toy” Ruger, which in my young eyes was just plain cool.  This is in accord with recent research that people are happier with purchases made impulsively, as opposed to ones made after careful analysis.

Fast forward several years and my older brother and I were squirrel hunting. He reached down to pick up a squirrel in a creek bottom while I was standing on the bank.  We both at the same time saw the gaping mouth of the biggest, meanest looking moccasin we ever saw about a foot from his hand.  He apparently wanted the squirrel too.  I pulled out the HiStandard, flicked off the safety, and put a round right between that bastxxx’s (the snake’s, not my brother’s, he wasn’t a judge yet) eyes. I would say the chances of my cocking the Ruger and using its rudimentary sights to do that in time were pretty slim.

The moral is that, generally, guns are not toys, but golf clubs are.  Have all the fun you want thinking about it, but get the ones that appeals to your gut and senses.

For moccasin killing, I can recommend the Ben Hogan BH-5 Offset 3 iron.  Long enough to give you good distance (from the snake) but not too hard to control, and the leading edge provide good snake neck interaction, and unlike say my MP33’s, you don’t care if you beat the heck out of them.

As to GI irons, the paradoxical thing is that to the extent their advertised benefits are real, they are useful mostly in the hands of good players such as yourself.  Incremental increases in MOI don’t help people much if the difference is between being 20 yards and 30 yards from the green (and they can’t get it on the green from either distance).  Your being able to use them successfully does not mean they will help 18 handicappers either swing better, score better, or learn how to hit the ball better.

Lol. For moccasins I prefer a browning light 12 with a turkey load.     Leaves a nice red spray.   Nothing to cleanup.  Growing up on cottonmouth country.  I know.

770's have that same weird offset jump from the 8-iron to the 7-iron that my old TP CB's had.  That's the only thing I could say against them.

Looks like they offer them in 4-Pw stock but not showing a custom section at moment in LH. Although it shows 4-Gw available in LH in the specs. They also have the Forged Tec utlitily to get your lower lofts such as 18-21 or so.

and if you haven’t seen, these are coming out this year with a new Forged Tec...
