If you are saying that rule 14.2(d) is a little more restrictive because you have to pick the nearest similar lie, no question.  

 

In the case at hand, it's still in the rough and still likely not a materially different situation in terms of the next shot, but the two rules are different.

Essentially yes I believe so!  And to sum up the point I apparently fumbled around so much (lol!) IMO, a ball that was stepped on and then placed in a spot that is clearly not the nearest similar spot would result in an infraction even if it was within one club length of the original spot.

For me, I didn’t start watching much golf until this COVID period, and didn’t know about P. Reed’s controversial past until I start reading up on him lately.
 

So because of that, I judged him only on his performance on screen in the Tournaments that I’ve watched...and I have to say that he’s one of my favourite guys to watch on Tour.

 

To me, he probably has the best short game of any guy on Tour, and the shots he pulls off with his wedges are absolutely incredible! Seems like he’s so locked in to the role of the bad guy now that he just embraces it and uses it as fuel.

Years ago I was out on a long range tuna fishing trip, out at sea several days with a group of about 30 fishermen on a 110-foot boat. How can anyone be a fan of Patrick Reed?  I will answer in my own way.  I am not a big gambler, but in Vegas for a conference and decided to bet on the Masters.  Pick up a card and filled out the usual suspects.  So at this point I figure that I must look down on the odds card and pick a dark horse.  I see Reed and I knew he played well around the time so I added him to the bet.  Reed wins, and amazingly I think three of the four I bet on were right there on the final day.  Amazing.  At the same time we needed a new grill.  So I decided I would spend the winnings on a nicer gas grill.  It has a sear station that actually works and the ability to use a grate for real charcoal.  This weekend I will be grilling filet mignon over real hardwood charcoal, drinking red wine, and toasting Patrick Reed.

LOL....classic logic vs. emotion-driven mindsets in this debate. They were really championing this phantom marshal today on the telecast... I think it would’ve been more creative had they said a vicious dangerous animal interfered with Rory.

If nothing else, the bunker incident where Reed brushed his club backward clearing out sand behind the ball twice was an undeniable act of cheating by PGA Tour pro.

 

The people that defend this are the people that do those sorts of things themselves.

Seems to be mentally tough as well. Despite all the controversy that surrounds this guy, he seems to be able to let it go and focus on golf.

Agreed! Maybe some athletes just perform better in the role of the bad guy and like that feeling of the world being against them.

Nah. It's just that some people have a much higher standard than just "making things happen."

as with anything in life. It’s about balance.  Fake it till you make it is a real thing.  Old as time.  And shared amongst almost all rags to riches stories.  This holier than thou take that golf has , is hypocrisy at its best.    If he broke a rule. Penalize him.  Then shut up about it.  
 

im fine with agreeing with you that he is a person who will bend or break at times.  But you also need to see that a lot of the hype and hate that comes with that is due to people just not liking his personality. He doesn’t conform socially.  And the Bro culture hates him for it.  This is what attracts me as a fan.  He’s counter culture to the brushwood bros of golf.
