How could anyone be a fan of Patrick Reed?

Right.  But Brandel needs to be shamed into admitting he made all that up. Pulled it from his back pocket. It never happened snd he lied to demonize Patrick.

I would have said pulled it from somewhere between his back pockets.🤨

Yes, the nearest spot with a lie most similar to the original lie that is no more than one club length.

If you are saying that rule 14.2(d) is a little more restrictive because you have to pick the nearest similar lie, no question.

In the case at hand, it's still in the rough and still likely not a materially different situation in terms of the next shot, but the two rules are different.

So I think we really are talking about the same thing or result?

Essentially yes I believe so!  And to sum up the point I apparently fumbled around so much (lol!) IMO, a ball that was stepped on and then placed in a spot that is clearly not the nearest similar spot would result in an infraction even if it was within one club length of the original spot.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/volunteer-admits-to-stepping-on-rory-mc-ilroys-ball-in-embedded-ball-controversy-with-patrick-reed-012334685.html

Someone stepped on McIlroy’s ball

He also revealed that his decision has since been validated. He said a volunteer admitted to the PGA that he had stepped on McIlroy ball — information McIlroy didn’t have when he took relief, but confirms that his ball had been embedded.

“The Tour got an email on Monday that it had been stepped on and the volunteer said something like, ‘I’m so sorry that Rory is being dragged into this scenario, but I didn’t tell him that I actually stood on his ball to find it,’” McIlroy said.

Now, McIlroy has verification for his decision. As for Reed, we’re left to take him for his word.

Years ago I was out on a long range tuna fishing trip, out at sea several days with a group of about 30 fishermen on a 110-foot boat. One of the guys was a retired Oakland A's player who had enjoyed a long career in the majors. One night at dinner I asked him his take on all the stuff in the news on PEDs in baseball. His response, "If you aint cheatin' you ain't tryin' ". Probably the most succinct thing he said the entire trip.

is it wrong for me to say that while his actions are suspect... I still am more interested in his WITB and how its setup over what he did on the course... call me crazy and I know its about integrity... I get that, but we are generally gear hounds in this group.

LOL....classic logic vs. emotion-driven mindsets in this debate. They were really championing this phantom marshal today on the telecast... I think it would’ve been more creative had they said a vicious dangerous animal interfered with Rory.

Totally Stepford-like comments from these product placement analysts. Seems like anybody in the media can just make up anything these days. Just trying to instigate something to draw more viewers like Jerry Springer ‘who’s your real daddy segments’ now that the era of Tiger is waning.

For me, I didn’t start watching much golf until this COVID period, and didn’t know about P. Reed’s controversial past until I start reading up on him lately.

So because of that, I judged him only on his performance on screen in the Tournaments that I’ve watched...and I have to say that he’s one of my favourite guys to watch on Tour.

To me, he probably has the best short game of any guy on Tour, and the shots he pulls off with his wedges are absolutely incredible! Seems like he’s so locked in to the role of the bad guy now that he just embraces it and uses it as fuel.

Seems to be mentally tough as well. Despite all the controversy that surrounds this guy, he seems to be able to let it go and focus on golf.

Agreed! Maybe some athletes just perform better in the role of the bad guy and like that feeling of the world being against them.

Love him or hate him, there’s no questioning his abilities as a golfer!

There's a power in the minds of people like Patrick Reed.  He not only has the golf skills, but he's able to, under pressure, make things happen when needed, while his critics set on the coach and watch life pass them by.

If nothing else, the bunker incident where Reed brushed his club backward clearing out sand behind the ball twice was an undeniable act of cheating by PGA Tour pro.

The people that defend this are the people that do those sorts of things themselves.

By this do you mean defending the bunker cheating incident or this latest outrage du' jour where no one knows but him if he cheated?

Nah. It's just that some people have a much higher standard than just "making things happen."

If you want to be completely honest then I bet you have that standard as well.

  • 8 months later...

Justine now claiming the Hero sand incident was digitally altered video by NBC/The Golf Channel or the Tour to make Patrick appear to move sand with his club on the backswing. Some serious psychosis going on here.

Bingo.  You think when  he’s on his death bed he will say “ gee. I wish I’d been less controversial , maybe worked a 9-5 desk job and kept a clean appearance “.  Lol. Nope.

I assume you  meant few.  ?

as with anything in life. It’s about balance.  Fake it till you make it is a real thing.  Old as time.  And shared amongst almost all rags to riches stories.  This holier than thou take that golf has , is hypocrisy at its best.    If he broke a rule. Penalize him.  Then shut up about it.

im fine with agreeing with you that he is a person who will bend or break at times.  But you also need to see that a lot of the hype and hate that comes with that is due to people just not liking his personality. He doesn’t conform socially.  And the Bro culture hates him for it.  This is what attracts me as a fan.  He’s counter culture to the brushwood bros of golf.
