Show me your first driver

I’m genuinely curious to see what you guys learned the game with. My first set was a Callaway Little Bertha 5 club set. I loved those clubs and always appreciated that my dad went out of his way to start me with something really nice at the time.

Mine was similar to this. Hogan Speedslot persimmon. Had the 2 and 4 wood as well. My grandpa insisted I start playing golf at 15 and he gave me these.

Still gaming my first driver. I've cheated on it a few times but keep going back to it. Worn grip, epoxy rattle, and all. Just goes straight for me.

Those had to have been fun. I’d love to play a round with persimmon and balata

I remember playing balata balls occasionally as a kid when I’d find them around the muni course I played as a kid. I didn’t really know what I was hitting but I remember liking them so much more than the “hard balls” I’d find.

The first driver I had with a proper set of golf clubs was a MacGregor Dx Power Pyramid driver. Had the full matching set:

 

But my my first REAL driver was the OG Callaway Big Bertha that my dad bought me. Man I loved that club...crazy to think that the average fairway wood is bigger now days:

It was a pretty cool set of clubs to have as a kid. They all had this cool-looking pyramid of dots on the clubface. I wonder how those affected ball spin vs traditional grooves...and I can only imagine that these would be non-conforming based on current rules...lol.

My first real driver was a Taylor Made 360... bought it right after the 500 series came out... let a friend try it at the range and it immediately got a sky mark...

My first "real" driver was a Top Flite Intimidator with a titanium face which I found when I was around 14 years old.  Someone had snapped it in half and thrown it up against a fence at the local course I played.  I took the head to a local clubmaker with a Golfsmith catalog in hand and asked him what shaft I could get put into it.  Having the conversation inspired me to learn clubmaking and I went to my first clubmaking school when I was 15 and have been doing it ever since.

It was this one with a Memphis "10" shaft and stock grip...

A steel shafted 7.5d 975d.  for $400 on Ebay in 2000.  I know that its loft way was to low for me but I just started out at the time and didn't know any better about driver lofts.

 

I still have it in my basement.

My first driver was a Powerbilt Grand Slam. I got the full set, even came with the bag for $100 about 6 years ago. 

 

Hilarious considering how much I spend on clubs these days.

I had an old hand me down set as a middle schooler.  First a set of old wooden woods, then a set of metals.

 

 

 

My first club in high school as a burgeoning player the Pittsburgh Persimmon, and swiftly into a gold shafted Taylor Made, with the dimples that I covered with lead tape.  Then into a Big Bertha as a Junior that stayed with me until the Great Big Bertha came out while in College.  We were fitted for those by a Callaway rep and Mizuno irons (you had an option of Cleveland, Titleist and maybe one other).  I continued to play my Maxfli VHL's throughout most of my college golfing career, only putting the Mizuno's in the bag as a Junior in the spring season.  We only played 4 or 5 events in the fall back then.

First true driver I had came in a Sears department store set my dad bought for my brother and me back around 1964. Common "beginner" set of era had driver, 3W, irons 3-5-7-9 and a putter.

 

Sorry I can't show it to you.  Lost track of the Sears sticks after I got some used Wilson Staff woods and TopFlite Synchro-Dyne irons.

First driver I ever bought for myself with a Powerplay 3000 with a Topflight something or other shaft from a no nothing golf shop.  Was a TM 320 knock off, but have fond memories of it.  I know I was wild with it, but of course when you're young you can easily forget those shots and only remember driving it up to the front of the green on par 4s...  Likely on the 3rd or 4th ball on an empty course...

I’ve played Titleist drivers ever since. Nothing feels/sounds better to me, or works better for me.

My first driver was a Dunlop Airfoil, a 230cc or so steel driver that was part of the boxed starter set.  Then went to a Goldwin AVDP XL driver.  Milled aluminum clubhead with a nickel clubface.  

 

 

First driver I could hit well was a KZG Maraging Power driver.  It had a Composite Dynamics HP/M Tour shaft with an unmarked flex that seemed somewhat heavier than most, and I loved it.  Had an adhesive label under the grip, turned out to be over 100g, LOL.

My first "good" driver was a late '60's Walter Hagen.  Came as a set, driver, 3,4,5 woods, all matching.  Used from a friend of the family.  Got the matching irons as well, think I paid $100.00 for the whole deal.

My first real driver was a new 2007 Taylormade Burner 460. 

 

I've thought about buying an old one on eBay recently for giggles to see how much difference I see in distance vs current drivers.
