Azinger calls out Koepka on his Ryder Cup comments

People have forgotten that McIlory also made a negative comment about the Ryder Cup.

Dissing the Ryder Cup

For many players – and, indeed, these days for McIlroy himself – the Ryder Cup is as good as it gets. Second to maybe winning a major, nothing could top the thrill players such as Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and others get from representing Europe and throwing down against the USA, but in 2009 a fledgling McIlroy claimed he wasn’t interested in all that. Asked about his interest in making the Ryder Cup team, he said “[The Ryder Cup] is not a huge goal of mine. It’s an exhibition at the end of the day… I’m not going to go running around fist-pumping.” The comments provoked an icy response from then Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie – who promptly replied that “the Ryder Cup is most definitely not an exhibition” – although McIlroy quickly changed his tune once he made the team and has thankfully been a fully-paid-up Ryder Cup staple for Team Europe ever since.

Sometimes it depends on who says it and how they say it.  Attitude means a lot. Presentation etc. example ——

This is a view held by many players. To me, it is more in line with a WWE event....IMO

Brooks is playing out there, didn't relinquish his spot, Stricker played him in team formats, and he's playing just fine....think the attitude and team ability is fine.   Maybe views and vibes inside the locker room are a bit diff than perceived in the media/public.

He lost.  Probably because he couldn't take his morning nap or maybe because his personal chef wasn't there to cook him breakfast or maybe because he had to attend an early team meeting.

I think so.  I was just poking a little fun.  The European team is definitely weaker than I thought.  I think phil , one legged tiger and Bernhardt Langer could take most of them ( Rahm excluded ).  But I haven’t had a chance  to watch today yet.  Maybe they’ve got better ?

Brooks Keopka's behaviour towards the referees was disgraceful.  Not the pressurising to give him relief, but his foul-mouthed reaction when he finally didn't get it.

It wasn't right,  but the officials were COMPLETELY wrong and had BK got hurt off that it would have turned into QUITE the mess!

Armchair refereeing?   🙄🙂

Had Koepka genuinely been that concerned about injuring himself, he could have taken penalty relief.  That he didn't was perhaps telling?

As you age, you see how important the Ryder Cup is. Tiger and Rory are two examples. Brooks said his comments as a veteran…because he’s Brooks.

Oh, and when you start arguing semantics, then you've lost the argument.

Words have meanings.  When you use different words it changes the meaning of your argument.

You said something to the effect of "he was directly quoted, therefore how could it have been taken out of context."  Then you used the word "perceived" in relation to his quoted answers when you just made the argument that there was no room for interpretation or perception.

They are the words you used.  If you do not want them to mean what they mean, pick the correct ones for the point you are attempting to make.

Correct - it was a "try on" that a lot of players would have attempted but most would have backed off once the referee ruled. BK hit a great shot and when you see it in slo-mo his club was nowhere near the point he was saying he was worried about hitting as that was so far below the level of the ball. I actually thought Berger was as bad if not worse in how he addressed the officials.

The consistent element of most of these weird relief requests is that the player has hit his ball into a place he shouldn't have hit his ball.

Bryson's "burrowing animals" relief request just happened to occur when his ball was blocked by a tree. Brooksie's "drain" relief request happened to occur when his partner had hit the ball into some nasty shrub.

I think the officials see through this nearly every time.

McIlroy was a mere 20 years old at that point, not sure how that's comparable to 31 year old "veteran" of the tour. That said, seeing how things went, I wouldnt be surprised if Koepka agreed with Azinger's perception, and how he's changed

Koepka was more than likely speaking from his current feelings. Feelings change for everybody day to day. He did great. Golf isn’t war as Azinger makes it. And koepka wanted to be there when it started. I like Azinger by the way more than Koepka personally. Azinger speaks a lot like Koepka from the cuff.

Cupcake is a different cat.  I would not call the Brooks-Brooksie love fest with BDC fake; it was about as genuine as those two can get.  It's ironic that the PhDs of golfwrx ready to proclaim BDC as on the autistic scale (remember when it was just ok to be bipolar?) have missed that it is actually Cupcake who is socially awkward.  Post RC victory, there were so many weird moments where Cupcake didn't seem to fit in as well as BDC.  Where he stands, how he talks, his distancing, it is a bit different than the rest of the team.  Bottom line though, he can play.  Cupcake a lot of great shots on his match; made a lot of key putts, and damn near aced 17.

Azinger was dead wrong about him which is not a shock since he has a man crush on BDC.  Cupcake does not exactly do himself any favors.  But we only know about these things thanks to the microscope of the media.  The reality is, Koepka is a different animal, but not so much out of any spectrum, a pretty harmless.  I would play golf and enjoy it anytime with Brooks, and same goes for BDC.
