Obviously depends on where I play but I generally don’t lose balls. I do retire them after a round if they’re dirty/scuffed.

I’ve actually accumulated such a large stash of balls that I haven’t been too disappointed when I do lose one lately. So I can go buy more! 😂

I've only had a few rounds played without losing a ball.  My home course has lots of forested areas where it is very easy to lose a ball.  As well as high grass areas where you have to know exactly where your ball landed to have any chance of locating it.  In the fall I'll lose balls in the leaves.  I play inexpensive $1 used balls.

1-2, if none then one will have to be retired after about 9 holes.

I answered 2-4, but I’ve been playing better as of late.  As long as I leave with more than I started, it’s a good day.

I did lose 1 on my simulator the other day…

Depends on the course. Usually 3-5 per round for me. When I can’t hit a tee shot on the planet to save my life I’ve stopped counting at 10.

Over the last year I have lost an average of 1.4 balls per round with a max of 6.  Tight course with lots of high grass and broad leaf rough in spring along with poison oak, various creeks, ponds and what not.  Pretty easy to lose a ball every now and then.  I do find more then I lose though...

One of the benefits of my crazy practice routine back when learning, I hit the ball relatively straight, thus rarely lose balls.  Typically, a ball lasts me 3-5 rds, and is taken out of play when it discolors.  But you'll be happy to know I lost a ball recently, due to leaves on the ground in the fairway.

Really depends on my game, I've gone as few as 0-2 for a decent stretch to maybe seeing if the cart girl can run to the pro shop for me. The worst for me is when I know where the ball landed but is burried in the grass on some courses.

As others have said, depends on my game. Example...this past Christmas I went and a visit with my dad in South Florida where we played 9 holes on 2 different days. I hadn't played since the summer due to a slight injury I had. The first 9 we played I lost 8 golf balls, lol. A few days later, didn't lose one ball and shot 4 under...just never know sometimes.

I’m one of those guys who is completely not confident in starting a round with under a dozen balls. Generally garbage balls or found balls, maybe a good ball here or there.

In the fall I was losing maybe six to eight across 18 holes, and much of that is attributable to fall leaves and fall grass. We don’t have much OB, and only a couple water features.

That said in the summer before when the course was well kept, I was down to maybe 2-4 balls in a round and I was really pleased with that achievement. I started to use some good balls and noticed a big difference from the usual Noodles and Pinnacles.

Edit: 15 cap who used to keep score at first by how many balls were lost and found. 15th club is a ball retriever. And, to the poster above who may have been joking, I definitely have lost balls inside the garage sim. I have premium balls because I figured you couldn’t lose them! Creeps into the padding of the Carl’s frame. Clean out and RE-velcro once a month for some gifts.

I only have 4-5 balls in my bag …. I carry and those things weigh your bag down fast.

in a tournament I will have 6 in my bag so I can replace a scuffed or damaged ball.

full disclosure… I play the Vice pro orange shade and pro v1 yellow balls. It helps me track the ball in the air and find it in the rough …. For some reason i cannot track white balls in the air very well.

if I can’t finish a round with this amount of balls, it’s time to go to the bar and grab a drink.

0-4 with huge variability. I can go almost two full rounds with the same ball or lose 2-3 balls on a single hole.  I used to not understand how anybody who wasn’t a really good golfer could typically lose 0 balls. Then I played some other courses that are so wide open, with no water or woods that even my horrible swings wouldn’t lose balls. The courses I regularly play all have water, woods, and/or tight out of bounds that just eat up balls on bad swings. And I’m always gonna have some bad swings.

Depends on how I’m playing.

Lately I’ve been in a slump and I’m going through a lot of balls. A couple of weeks ago I lost 3 balls on one hole. My all time personal record is 6 in the lake on one hole on my way to a Tin Cup 14. It only posted as a double though so I had that going for me.

Losing balls sucks.  Not just the monetary loss, but the penalty stroke that goes with it.  If I'm playing well, I don't lose one for the whole round.  In a so-so round, I might lose 1 or 2.  There is something about losing a ball outside of a penalty area that really bothers me.  Losing a ball in a PA (water hazard) doesn't seem as bad because it's not always a bad swing.

What I really hate to have happen is to hit a 2nd ball when your first is in play (playing by oneself) just to see if you can hit the shot you really wanted to hit and then lose that ball.  I say I won't do that again, but here we are.

I can go a while without losing a ball and then all of a sudden, I'm emptying the bag in a soul-sucking, self-loathing episode.  Where's the effin' parking lot?

So before you judge me I need to qualify this by saying i play on a course with a ton of OB, water and stakes....So it's not like some courses where you can just hit it anywhere

So in an average round with all that considered i usually lose no balls

I hear you. I have my screen on with only two bungees per side on an 8x8 AND two sound dampening panels hanging behind the screen from the frame. I did this to prevent ricochets but I will definitely still get some bouncers around the garage. So far, only a bruised ego 👍

Whaa.....? So this got me to thinking, what would be the appropriate tip to  the cart girl (person) be  to retrieve a new sleeve or box of pellets ?

I'm thinking minimum $20 for the SMH experience at least..... ; )

It can be all over the place. I've lost 4 or 5 in a round and played 4 or 5 rounds without losing one. Average is probably between one and 2.  I'm working on getting better with that as pretty much 9/10 of those are driver gone left at this point. I still miss right but those are usually findable and I can rip a punch cut off the deck like nobody's business.

One of my sons used to be a really good golfer - I think he got down to 1 hdcp at his best. While in law school he didn’t play hardly any golf, and decided to hit some of the newest drivers at a golf store.

He said he had to wait for the hitting bay as there were several people standing around. When it’s his turn he gets in the bay and prepares to hit one of the beautiful 300 yard draws he used to hit.

First attempt was a loud runner that went under the screen. Second swing was an even louder burner that somehow rebounded back towards him and went flying past towards the people waiting their turn. He said he calmly put the driver down and did the walk of shame out of the store.
