What club do you use? Ball on the fringe of the green and pin is 15 feet from the fringe.

I find this to be one of the easiest shots to screw up. Ball is on the fringe, sometimes the thicker stuff just past the fringe and the pin is just 15 feet or so from the fringe. I typically try to use a wedge and put the ball on the back foot and chip it low.

I see some golfers try to use a putter and that usually turns out bad because it's so hard to judge how hard to hit it through the fringe and get enough roll out.

I've had some of my best luck with a high lofted iron, but even those are hard to judge.

What works for you?

Wedge, unless the pin is downhill.

If the lie is bad enough to not allow clean contact with a putter, it’s going to be a 60 degree wedge.

I use putter. Much better speed control. If 2nd cut then you pretty much have use some kind of lofted wedge. I play it back in my stance to bump it low and land it just short of the green or just on the green depending on slope and speed.

Hybrid! Gets it to bump over the fringe and still plays like a putt.

Generally lie dependent, but 9 times out of 10 I'll use putter. More consistent distance control than with a wedge.

8 or 9 iron, use a putting stroke and intentionally toe it.

I usually putt. I just make sure to pay attention to the direction of the grain on the fringe to determine speed.

3 wood putting stroke. Made too many countless birdies and eagles this way so why change it?

Ive even used 3 wood from 10 yards off the fairway too put it into tap in range.

Almost always a putter. Exception would be if the fringe has a ball mark or other big imperfection that would move the ball offline. Only other play would be a 54 wedge chip.

If I can get away with putting I'll choose that first. If not, 52° wedge.

I've been experimenting with using a hybrid for such shots, but I've still yet to get familiar with how hot the ball comes off the face.

I would putt it, but if the lie is bad I might stand an iron up and do a Runyan kind of thing.

Putter most of the time. Might use 8 iron if the lie is bad though.

7 iron with a putting stroke. Enough loft to get it airborn. One bounce on the fringe and it rolls out like a putt

Can be a putter, 7i with a putting stroke or a 54* wedge. Depends on lie.

Check the lie, this is what's going to dictate what kind of shot you need to hit. If it's sitting on the fringe with no other visible obstructions on your lie i would use the putter, if this conditions do not apply use whatever club you feel most comfortable with.

For me it may be a 56 or 52 wedge and try to hole it every time !

You described two very different scenarios. If it's truly on the fringe I'm putting. Easy to catch a wedge fat or thin and be in bad shape. A putter is always going to make good contact. Any bad putt will end up better than a bad wedge from 15 feet. If it's in the rough at all I'm most likely grabbing a wedge. Only time I wouldn't is if I'm only a couple inches in and it's short rough that the ball is sitting on top of.

If the green speed is fast, a 48 or 52 degree wedge. If the green speed is slow, then an 8 iron. I find green speed determines my loft selection nearly as much as the lie.

I watch pros on TV and see them land a 56 or 60 1/2 way to the hole and it rolls out to the hole. Playing on slower greens you'd need to throw that wedge a lot closer to the hole. Then errors come into play. I can throw a 9 iron 1/2 way to the hole and it rolls out to the hole. People forget about green speed v loft.

I'll use the putter most of the time. Possibly my 60 wedge or hybrid. Depends on the lie to me.

Obviously I use a “chipper”... the putter lengthed club with the loft of a seven iron! I see that in someone’s bag and I get worried. That guy is going low today!

in all honesty, I think this is one of the places on the golf course where you need to focus on the least bad option.

putter is great if you can get the club on the ball and the early roll isn’t going to kill you.

high degree wedge chips I’m more comfortable with but suffer more from bad contact. Also increases the chance I’ll try to get cute and do something stupid.

low lofted putting stroke shots are probably the best option if you actually practice them... I might do that today. Seems like a shot you should have in the bag.
