What is your biggest difference in 9 hole score during a 18 hole round? Tale of two nines

  • 2 weeks later...

Recently, during a $$$ game, I was 5 over on the front, then 1 under on the back, walking off 18.  It sometimes takes me some holes to get my head to wake the hell up.  Not proud of it, sometimes I am mentally lazy on the front, so bogies happen, then magically around #6-#8, my brain kicks in saying wake the hell up and get in the game.

My errors are NOT swing related, merely head related.

One under thru 13, and 15 over on the last 5. I had a little trouble on a replica of 17 at the players.

A "little trouble"? Was there a piranha involved?

In my first year of golf I produced this beautiful 46-69 split.

I caught the shanks on the back, and it was like I had never hit a golf ball before. I only continued to keep score because I made a birdie on the front, and those were really rare at the time. I went out two days later and shot a 96 like nothing ever happened, but it was a crazy experience for a new golfer!

Went 49-40 recently, the front 9 was really unlucky with lost balls and bounces, I was hitting the ball extremely well. The back funny enough felt like a struggle and had 1 birdie putt lip out and 1 chip for birdie hit the pin and sit 1" from going in.

This is a weird freaking game.

30-42. I'll never forget it. Seven Hills Golf Course in Hemet, California many years ago (1995?). Was just coming into my own as a decent am (probably +1ish at the time). Six birdies on the front. Grabbed a bite at the turn with thoughts of "59 IS attainable on this course..."

And then ... CRASH!!! BURN!!! LOL

30-41 for me Obee (years ago), grabbed lunch at the turn and was thinking course record, gagged!

First round post heart attack…hadn’t even putted for several months, 39-60 holing a flop shot over a bunker to a tucked pin on 18 to stay under 100. What makes it worse is that I parred 10 and birdied 11 to sit at 2 over. Just ran out of steam and played the last seven holes in a smooth 25 over 😂

8 over on the front 9... and 2 under on the back 9... i usually play the back very well and its by no means easy as any course really isnt. Par 72 6400 from white. Ive played a 1 in the back before so i know if i can play well in the front then i can play a very nice back 9 maybe. Well after i shot the 8 i though ok maybe mid low 80s today... i went into the last hole a par 5 even. This par 5 is really easy for me all the time. I eagles once before here and ive been on for eagle a few times. Hit really good drive. Hit an unbelievable 3wood which i duffed the other 2 times i used it this day. Pulled up to a 13 foot eagle.. to make eagle finish a 9 under par for first time and shoot my lowest round ever 78. It was pretty much straight just a touch of break... nailed it.

Not me, but my 16 yr old son this summer in a tournament. Par 72, 6,500+ yds….got off to a rocky start due to a bad luck bounce on first hole par 5. Hit a good drive and then second shot was struck well but slightly left of green unfortunately 30 ft left of green is all OB…ball hit something by green and kicked straight left and OB. Proceeds to double the hole and then shoot a +9 (45) on his front. Then proceeds to go -4 (32) his next nine holes which included a lazy bogey.

But that back 9 was very fun to watch as he literally did everything he wanted those holes.

I just wonder how many people have had what happened to me yesterday happen to them. I Started off my round yesterday triple, double, triple, double, quad to be +14 after only 5 holes. Made one more bogey on 8 and mixed three pars in for an even 50 on the front. Not my best stuff for sure. Make the turn and par the first 5 hole. Then finish with two bogeys and a stupid double on 18 to shoot a 40 on the back(which for me is a very good 9 hole score). 10 strokes under what i did on the front. Id consider the two nines equally challenging on paper. So im sure you guys have some good stories of nines being total opposites so let’s hear them!

I gotcha by 10. When I first started actually counting all the strokes due to betting with my buddies I hadn’t ever broken 100. Then one day…

I shot a 40 on the front nine. Best 9 by far for me at that time. Figured breaking 100 was a done deal. Nope. Back 9 was a smooth 60. What a mess!

Fast forward to a couple years ago. Playing in a good buddies tournament. 36 a day for 3 days. Fun and games until the 6th round. Then it’s full on all the rules apply stroke play.

I shot 105 in the morning and 82 in the afternoon at Fossil Trace in Golden CO. Same guy. Same sticks. Same ball. Same course. WTF?

I can't complain then as I had one of the best rounds ever, everything just click but pulled a chest muscle while from time to time I deal with a sore back. I played thru the pain but now I'm worried if I will have a hard time trying to correct my swing flaws the next time I go out. What become frustrating is I know what I'm capable of scoring but I just couldn't execute and I was getting so mad at myself that I said I'm done for the year. Lol! Well actually the season is slowly coming to and end here in Ohio as the weather is taking a turn for the worse so when I do get out again it may very well be my last as I can't golf with the weather being below 50 degrees as the sun better be out and no wind if I do go out this late in the year. I hate winter

Ha!  “Same guy. Same sticks.” I usually add, “Ball isn’t moving. No defense.”

How to explain the ridiculous variance in golf?!

And I just remembered the next year was reversed at Cobble Creek. Same 3 day tournament format. Third day I shot 80 in the morning, 93 in the afternoon. Total train wreck.

Pretty sure I need to stop chasing distance and start hitting greens.

54-43

Twilight round where I was paired up with a bunch of kids on the front nine - it was messy and all over the place lol

Walked the back nine solo and got a little closer to playing my game

Similar, I had a 52-43 a couple weeks ago. Old me would have written the round off and done worse on the back, new me played every shot the best I could to positive effect!

30-42 is my "one that got away". Never hit the ball so well on the front, and then I lost consciousness on the back 9, in a bad way.

38-49 yesterday. But the thing is my buddy—and opponent who was giving me 4 shots per side—went 42-36. So while “only” an 11 shot difference for me, in the context of the match it felt like a 17 shot swing!

Thought it was gonna be really profitable, but turned out to be almost nothing!
