I can see this happening.  The USGA and R&A announce that driver head size has to be rolled back, driver face CT has to be rolled back, and the ball has to be rolled back.  Mike makes the announcement and then heads for the door, with the you know what flying around the room.

For as much as i've bashed the guy, i have enjoyed how he has set up US opens vs his predecessor. 

 

That being said, i will not miss his musings on how terrible the modern game is

Rollback the ball and Driver?  Notice who are the champions of this battle cry?  All of the old guys who refuse to  accept that the players today are bigger and stronger.  What is next, outlaw the 64* wedge?  How about high MOI putters?  They want to go back to the day of hickory shafts, gutta percha, and Calamity Jane.

Ball should have been rolled back years ago.  I don't think pro baseball players should have 8" diameter aluminum bats either.  I know, becoming a fogey.

Someone suggested growing rough really high 300 yds out. Thought that was an interesting idea. I think there could be other creative ways to make adjustments for big tournaments other than rolling the tech back on balls and equipment. No easy answers.

Can’t say I’ve been a fan.  Wonder if the next boss will: 

 

1. create U grooves because V grooves didn’t work 

 

2.  Implement a 40” driver 

 

3.  Require pros to use a wound golf ball 

 

4.  Require a putter length be no greater than 34” 

 

Let’s do as much as we can to get golf back to 1975.

I would say on some holes.  Driving distance is also a skill so there should be some holes where the long guys get to use it as an advantage-not all, but a few.

Poisoned chalice for his successor. US Open course set up aside, I have never quite understood why the USGA gets such a hard time as opposed to the R&A.

Fergie, It must be bizarro day because I'm strongly agreeing with you twice before 8AM! ?

You're right no matter what his successor does there are going to be some very unhappy and critical people.  The equipment and distance topic in particular is one hot potato.

I'm not surprised one bit Davis decided to step down, what a thank-less job.  Almost as bad as being the POTUS these days.
