I think there’s a big confusion between the Lululemon joggers and tights. I imagine some of the older gentleman are picturing men golfing in yoga pants... that’s not what it is. Just a more taper, tailored look. Joggers stop short of the ankle and some have a cuff there, but they’re a far cry from spandex leggings.

Have to agree. I am becoming a fan of the more tailored look and especially appreciate keeping the bottom of my pants dry and clean. I also think it is a more athletic look vs some of the other styles we’ve seen (oversized shirts, baggy, pleated pants, etc.).

I will say some of the late 50’s/early 60’s pics look pretty solid, and Adam Scott almost always looks well tailored.

While it's true there is a difference, I still can't get on board with joggers being appropriate attire for a golf course. In my opinion you shouldn't be able walk off the course straight into the gym or vice versa. Also, I feel like one of the go to arguments pro-jogger people make is the material. Just because they aren't spandex doesn't make them look any better on the course. They could be made of 100% wool I still think they look like sweatpants.

That being said I personally couldn't care less what people wear as long as they adhere to the clubs dress code policy. I would just never be caught dead in a pair of joggers on a golf course.

I agree and Im all for more athletic wear in golf. All the modern fabrics with stretch and comfort built into them are infinitely better than anything from before.

All that heavy, stiff, hot cotton in the 90's. I don't understand how we did it. Even my office clothes these days is entirely comprised of breathable, stretchy, borderline athleisure attire.

I remember on a few really hot and humid summer days I would change shirts after 9 because mine was soaked.  Heavy 100% cotton.

50's-Classic cool, give me some Ben Hogan, or even Jimmy Demarat

60's -Cardigans seems to rule, with nice looking trousers and well fitting polos.  Prime Arnie had swagger.

70's-I mean, if you love Johnny Miller.....all I have to do is look at my first day of kindergarten pic to realize it wasn't just golfers who had some crazy polyester style happening.

80's-Polos got softer collars, Khakis with reasonable pleats, Ralph Lauren seemed to be everywhere.

90's-baggy, your sleeves interfered with your swing.  Tobasco, Woody Austin, Tom Lehman anyone?  Dockers!!!!

2000's-Stinky 100% nylon, but a step forward.  Hated the mock necks, Nike and Tiger killed golf attire.

2010's- I don't like where this is heading, but for a minute the more casual dress was comfortable.  Too many golfers trying too hard to look like they are playing a cardio sport now, I wish golfers wore nicer clothes not athletic wear.

2020's-Is this a yoga class or golf?  Seriously I'd like to see a bit of the classic cool make a comeback.

Sorry, rant over.

The Boomers are long gone and fading from the Senior tour, it's up to the young guys to see the error in their ways.  I mean Jack Nicklaus lost his mind for a bit in the 70's, it could happen...........you think we could get Rickie for maybe Hoveland in some worsted wool trousers, slight break at the knee, and a nice cotton blend polo.  Maybe some classic looking FJ Icons and a hat that actually fits his head?

I don't know.  Rickie is cooler than cool.  He can wear anything and make it work.  I was watching the old ESPN commercials last night.  There is one where he's dressed head to toe in orange but it's revealed he's colorblind.  Funny.  No, we need a guy who only thinks he's cool.  Koepka.  Put Koepka in some fancy duds appropriate for his age and maybe we'll get some traction.

I agree, Rickie is cool, I have heard nothing but good things about the guy, and in all fairness his attire is starting to look more "adult"  but as I said, earlier even the legends of the game had bad moments in the 70's.  Great commercial.

I've been playing for 50 years and golf fashions come and go.  I'm not a fan of the new slim cut styles that have been in vogue in recent years.  When those first hit the pro shop where I used to work, most everybody had to go up a size to find a comfortable fit.  I lived through the polyester and banlon era of the late sixties and seventies.  While some golf styles come back around, I am pretty sure those won't be making a reappearance.  For those who are down on the mock turtlenecks, they were actually popular for a time in the sixties. Bob Goalby can be seen in an old photo wearing one while he dons the green jacket in 1968.  These days I just want to be comfortable and courses are taking a more relaxed attitude toward dress codes.  I suspect to attract younger people to the game.  I do draw the line at the guy who shows up wearing a tank top.

The 50s and early 60s were the epitome, of you ask me. Well-fitted polo shirts, pants (even the pleated ones) that draped nicely, shoes that were made - not manufactured. Timeless, IMO.

And I am sure there were older guys in the 1950s complaining that people weren’t wearing jackets, ties and knickers.

Are u guys being serious that they have golf specific leggings for men?

compression leggings help performance. That’s why NBA players wear them.

If there is even the slightest boost to a player’s drive distance, you will see everyone wearing them on tour.

90's definitely the worst

I'd probably go for 60's as the best, but no one has ever looked cooler than this on a golf course, although Arnie in the 60's was very close

I can’t argue with that. We like what we like, and a lot of it is defined by what we become comfortable with in the past, what connects with us in the present, and what fits us as we age. Interestingly, both JT and Ryan Moore have harkened to the “formal” look by wearing ties and cardigans on the course fairly recently, and both were praised for it in fashion circles. To each his own. It’s a bit much for me, but I prefer it over some of the more flashy, outside the box looks. That’s more “me” than joggers or loud colors.

I understand that, sleeves over the arm, quads/thigh/calf, but we are talking about style here....I don't doubt there are golfers who wear compression gear under there clothing.....I think I've seen sleeves too but that could very well be for sun protection vs. performance benefit.  Likely a similar concept to that tape people are wearing all over themselves.

Yep. It’s now for sure.  I’m a tall guy with a 35 inch waist.  You literally have to try on every single pair of shorts or pants to know what you have. Some are Capri pants.  Some shorts are trimmed below the knees. I hate long shorts and short pants.

Agree on the sizing aspect, I'm about 6'1 and a size 35/36 waist, I cant tell you how many pants/jeans I have tried and they all fit different.  I've been searching for a reasonably priced pair of golf pants that fit in my waist but the legs were 'slim' for over a year.  Found some at Banana Republic (City Pants) that I like.

I mean, you can call them whatever you want, and god bless ya if you like them, but this is the least masculine look I have ever seen on a male on a golf course. This just screams prissy girly guy. The only difference between these and spandex leggings is these aren't spandex.

I'm 40, grew up in the 90s, and I would take oversized cotton pleated pants and shirts 5 sizes too big over this look any day, and twice on Sunday.

I personally prefer clothes that actually fit. shirts that do not look like you're wearing your uncle's hand-me-downs, and also that don't look like you raided your 10 year old little sister's closet. I like pants that are not pleated that don't look like hammer pants from the 90s, but also pants that do not look like they are ready to bust a seam. Pants should cover your ankles and break over the top of your shoes. A little bunching is ok, but too much and it looks like you're again wearing your uncle's hand-me-downs. Properly fitted clothing is the key. If your ankles are showing, your pants are not long enough, and there's really just no getting around that.

I’m with you on this, BigRed.  This is the kind of look you expect to see from “that guy” who orders a lemon loaf and quad shot, non fat, vanilla soy, extra foam, light whip with caramel drizzle from Starbucks.

I'm not even sure what half of that is. I prefer coffee flavored coffee. Brew it, and pour it in a cup.

The current style makes me want to check to see if they have a man card...They likely have that new part-time metro card.

Every era has it's version of fugly. I prefer comfortable, functional and understated style. As for pleats, they did provide room for the boys to have their freedom.

Gonna shut up now and all you kids can get off my lawn.

those new jogger styles are nothing more than fancy tailored sweatpants. I'd bet they are great for practice and casual wear.

some may prefer more traditional looking attire.

no one is saying tweeds are required, though there are many types of garments to please and look darned nice on the course and in the clubhouse.

I've always felt that whatever you wear for the day should be able to go from place to place without much fuss.

add a layer, remove a layer, whether that be a nicer jacket, v-neck, tie, ( I know, horrors), different socks, nicer shoes.

be flexible.

you never know what your next stop might be.

Every era UNTIL now was characterized by out of shape guys who looked like they were shopping at Mark’s Work Warehouse.
I do understand how men wearing fitted clothes on a fit physique could make those from the past feel insecure and uncomfortable though, hence the hate for recent trends in golf styling.

Yeah, agreed, 60s might be the answer. I'd hate to wear the shoes from that era, and I have an issue with dress code on golf courses for the most part, but the 60s might be the best off a bad bunch.

It also helps if you are born cool, as Seve was...
