Sort of...but it's mutual exploitation. Players are getting a couple of hundred thousand worth of education and a place to showcase their skills for the NFL.

This is a terrible move by the PGA Tour IMO. The players in one of the only individualistic sports we know are now to be rated based on public persona. Good for some people who are gregarious, crappy for others who are introverts.

I don’t see why so many people are against this?! Rory has won 54 million and Charles Howell has won 41 million. I bet the common person doesn’t even know Charles Howell. Rory brings so much to the tour by bringing many more viewers. So does someone like speith who has made 45 million. If Rory or Jordan are in the final group versus someone like Charles Howell on Sunday viewership would be so much higher versus Charles. The tour prays every weekend some big name is still in the tournament when it comes to Sunday. 
 

Consider it like a work bonus. All the big names will get a bonus at the end of the year. This is a fantastic idea and I bet the majority of players on the tour like this idea. Everyone on the tour profits more from the big names as the purses grow and more people watch. They need to get compensated for that.

The charity comes out of the proceeds from individual tournaments, not from the players or tour itself.

 

Not a penny comes from the $700 million+/year TV contract, TPC properties and licensing, etc.

 

 

It's time for the Tour to give up the fake tax-exempt status and be like all of the other professional sports. If you think 'so what?" then you're acting like for-profit entity.

Expressed opinion earlier and only more convinced after thinking about it that is is a terrible idea.  Interesting this got outed now, at least I don't think the Tour intended to leak it, since it's been in place since January and likely decided well before that, probably as part of the Euro Tour deal and discussions.

 

Really surprised the Tour backed down (at least my perception) and seemingly caved to blood sucking agents (doing their jobs) for players likely making real or not so real "threats" through said leeches to exploit the oil rich interlopers.

 

The criteria are laughable and seemingly validate all sorts of ridiculous notions, the primary one being who are the favs in this month's issue of "Tiger Beat" (if that is still around, but ironically appropriate).

 

Also seems to set up competition among players who may want a piece of this outside the ropes in unseemly ways (which feeds the Tour's overriding drive for $$$, is the Tour that sleazy?), but also seems to set up a lot of hard feelings that could go wrong in all sorts of ways.  Better keep "the masses" happy --- a "Tour" with 10 guys playing every week because the other couple hundred figured out a different angle won't make the $40 million.  Doubt that could really happen given the Tour's success and stake in so many Tours across the globe, but you never know.   I see Zalatoris as the young Anastasia in the movie.

The responses here are really confusing to me as well. What you said is the exact reason why they're doing it. The overwhelming majority of the broadcast audience isn't tuning in to watch Lanto Griffin, Tyler Duncan, JT Poston or really the majority of the people in the field each week even though I believe all of these players won last year.  As such the people like that won and they won on merit, but that purse that they won is what it is because of the big names that drive the audience.

 

 

They are not giving people strokes based on popularity or mulligans based on interactions on social media. The winner each week is still going to earn a win and there is still plenty of money for the consistent players that keep their card year in and year out but rarely or ever win.  This is a bonus for the players that make golf a profitable business that don't get rewarded for that monetarily by the PGA (they are of course still awarded through more endorsements).
