Not surprised one bit. His waffling on whether or not he'd accept such an exemption, was a lot of huffing and puffing. There was no doubt in my mind that if offered, that he'd take it.

Phil does invite the mockery himself though, through some of his laughable statements these days.  I don't hate the guy or anything, but he does spew some choice BS.

Good for him and good for the USGA.  Phil has meant a ton to golf and specifically ton to golf in San Diego.  While I get the argument regarding the taking a spot from someone who earned it, there comes a point where you look over the body of work, career, location and timing in his career.  You can easily say, Phil has earned the right to say goodbye to the US Open in his hometown.

Yes, Phil is very altruistic.  He would also consider joining the PGL as a "selfless act".  He just wants to help those in need you know!

Of course, he going to play. It will be likely his last chance to play the US Open at his home course. It is a chance of a lifetime and he says he is  mulling it over. 😂🤣

I would rather see Phil get an exemption/"invitation" than Fowler.

Good for Phil.  Its likely his final US Open, so good on the USGA for letting Phil play in what is essentially his own backyard.

 

Unlike someone like Rickie Fowler, Phil has actually won some professional tournaments in the past year.  I suspect he'll play well in an effort to validate the invite.

It's a little late now to practice a suitable game plan, but had he not been wasting all this time on "dropping bombs" and learned to hit more fairways, he might have actually had a chance.

 

Ok, I am kidding, he never really had a chance this year.  But good for him he gets in with an exemption.  Good for the fans if and only if he plays some decent golf.

Has the USGA stopped inviting the U.S. Senior Open champ to the U.S. Open? Seems to be the case. It's no longer listed as an official exemption.

 

That would have been a good route for Phil to play in this again. So this indeed may be his last unless lightning strikes at the Masters or Brexit Open.

Easy explanation. There was no US Senior Open played in 2020. Nobody to give the exemption to. Steve Stricker won the last US Senior Open in 2019 and played the US Open at Winged Foot last year.

He's lucky he's that highly rated. One good event from out of nowhere last year (WGC Memphis) is the only thing that's keeping from being rated in the 190's in the OWGR.
