Is this the weakest era in golf?

Old man Phil becoming the oldest player to win a major at 50

Tiger with a busted body winning the Masters and also first time winning from behind

The so called hottest player since Tiger, Rory not won a major since 7 years ago and now ranked 30th

Rory Spieth, Day, Brooksie, Rickie long spells of years of not winning and  only now down winning weak field tournaments once or at most twice a year

Bryson the most hyped player since Tiger with the media saying he has changed the game of golf and exposed as a gimmick.

The worst PGA scoring average (69.78)  since 1991 even though distance has increased, techinolgy is 10x better.

Rahm word number one and never won a major , when last did he win on tour? Lol

These guys a fat and bloated with too much money.  As long as they get a few top 10's and occasional win in years and keep their sponsors happy by doing sposnor work - it's mission accomplished.

Most people I know that were really into golf and hyped with the young generation of the Rorys. Spieths, DJ, Day et al have given up and rarely watch golf. Even the energy on this forum is flat and forced. No one cares except a few nerds.

Got to thank Phil for injecting some energy for his win but now we are back to reality of the bore that is the pga tour.  Tbh its not just pga its every tour. Eurotour is a complete joke. Lpga is dead - no dominant player  (which  was the only thing that made the tour interesting) and the no star who captures the media attention.

GOLF should be spelt DEAD

No.

For a longer answer: No. Was golf weak when a end-of-his-career Nicklaus won The Masters because Faldo/Ballesteros didn't hold on? How dare the gap between players be tighter then when it was Snead and five others, or Nicklaus and eight others, and how dare one of the once-in-a-generation talents have a moment of shining brightly

Go drunk, you're home

Edit

Now if you're talking about media hyping...I get that, it's obnoxious

It's probably one of the deepest fields ever in golf and if one player isn't on their game there are going to be 5 more that are hot and gunning for a win. That's the reason why we have no stand outs like before.

I watched the US Women's Open this past Sunday and found it riveting.  On the back nine the outcome could have easily gone a half dozen ways - similar to Jack's 1986 Masters win.  Everything is cyclical. I recall when the Senior tour had Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, and others it was interesting to see them battle it out even though their skills had declined a bit.  Now the Senior Tour is at a low point unless Phil decides to play there.

hasnt golf always been that way someone has to win

I meant more in a handful of guys always winning like we won't see many guys with 3-5 wins in a season.

If you work at it you could probably write a similar analysis/opinion about every major professional sports league.

The only stat I see which is interesting is the scoring average stat being the worst since 1991.  The rest of it is just OP whining.  There are also some misleading items.  Like Rahm being World #1.  He hasn't been #1 in almost a year.  And when he did reach #1 it was after winning 2 events almost back to back and having multiple top 5 finishes sandwiched in between.  DJ has been #1 since the Northern Trust last year and has kept at #1 by winning 3 events including a major.

Who knows?  All of the young guns have decades more golf in them.  You're right that Rory has had a long dry spell.  He may never win another major.  When Arnie stopped winning majors, he was still only 35 years old.  He won all of his 7 majors in a 6-year span (1958-1964)!  So when the magic goes away, it can be quick.  But, with the emphasis on physical fitness today, Rory (or Jordan, or DJ, or Brooks, etc.) could flip the switch and have a renaissance middle and later part of his career.  He has time.  If Rory (or any other of the young guns) gets to 6 majors, then you're talking upper tier of all-time greatness.  Then, instead of debating whether golf is dead, we'll be talking about the 2020s as the decade when that person solidified his place in history.

The athletes in every sport are evolving and getting better, and golf is no different.  The talent is simply so deep that it is more difficult for there to be dominant stars, and for a lot of people, that does make things less interesting.  But it's the fact that the guys are so good that is making that happening, not the other way around.

Like men's tennis?  Where the big three have won virtually every grand slam tournament for the past 15 years?

Also, these tennis players get paid more than ever...doesn't seem to dull their desire to win.

I think golf is just too deep these days, and the margins between the players is very thin...I know when I watch the players at Riviera, it's incredible how many unbelievable players there are that just have a win or two out there...or maybe even none.

I see a lot of energy and opportunity in the top 50.  It's very competitive and hard to dominate.  It makes what DJ has done of late fairly impressive.  The bottom 50 is exciting for a different reason - competitive to hold onto a spot.  But that middle 50?  With a few exceptions, by and large there is a lot of settling, check cashing...and from my POV it shows there is too much money in golf.  Or at least, the distribution needs to change.

Here is owgr 2007 vs 2019.

See any familiar names?

In fact, “old timers” Rose and Casey were ranked higher in 2019 than they were 12 years prior in their primes.

Seem pretty equal as far as “big time” talent.

Plus, TW being #5 at 42 years old and with a broken body and a shadow of his 1.0 game throws cold 🥶 water on any arguments these current guys are uber golfers. Same with JRose at #4.

I was thinking this is the deepest and most talented field in golf history minus a once in 2 generations big time alpha dominant player.  Golf has become global just as every other sport.
