The story I read seemed like accusations that would not land someone in jail.  Got to be more to this one.

rule of thumb in life: never run from legal proceedings

no matter his initial innocence or guilt, Cabrerra’s subsequent behavior [and flight] has created a huge series of legal hurdles…

he will likely spend time in jail for fleeing….let alone the charges which initiated this whole nightmare

Both sad and disturbing.

He's always seemed to me to be the South American John Daly. Both have immense natural talent. Both incredibly entertaining to watch (when they are on their games). Both seen as "a man of the people". But both with personal lives so periodically disastrous that only a fraction their considerable talents were ever realized.

I really wonder what they could have been if they had discipline and long careers. All that ability, and John gambles away a fortune and hawks cheap clothes from a trailer outside tourneys, while Angel flees across a border as a fugitive, and winds up being extradited to stand trial for hitting a woman (even though it apparently "didn't hurt that much").

Just sad.

I just hope he isn't stripped of any titles.

He may or may-not be a horrible person off the course (I have no idea), but it would be a shame if his golfing accomplishments are nullified because of this.  I can just imagine the major golf lords stripping him of his records because it is Politically Correct and great for PR.  It plays well to the squeemish ladies....

I loathe revisionist history.

Is that a monogrammed 'AC' for Angel Cabrera face mask?

Gotta get that branding in, positive or not.

Titles and accomplishments can't be striped but the privileges that go with the titles certainly can be revoked by the organizations that extend those privileges.

I agree with this, nobody can deny that he won the majors and they happened but if the Masters stopped inviting a convict to dinner for a few years, I don't think anyone would blame them, they're entitled to do to what they want since he's brought the title into disrepute.

It's got nothing to do with PC, these are exclusive clubs, in any exclusive club (or most non-exclusive clubs for that matter) that you would be kicked out for being convicted and spending time in prison. This has always been the way for hundreds of years.

Cabrera won't be stripped of his golf titles.

This is not at all similar to Lance Armstrong who was guilty of cheating to achieve his TdF wins.

I did enjoy his swing though.

Of course.

Everyone clearly remembers Cabrera was only 1 shot away from making the playoff of the 1999 Open Championship. It will be hard to forget that next week.

I'm sure fans will do their best to keep it from their thoughts but I am thinking it will be looming, or the best case fleeting and quite possibly lingering.

There are no mechanisms to strip anyone of titles. The tours will (quietly) make sure he'll never compete for any more titles however - he's done.

Truth is, even if the tours could, legally, strip him of titles, I doubt they would. The vast majority of money the tours make come from broadcast contracts with TV networks, that then sell advertising. They have a very distinct value proposition they offer - an image they carefully cultivate. They have access to a very desirable demographic that advertisers have a hard time getting to otherwise. (Simply put, you're not going to see a lot of commercials for Rolex or BMW while you're watching a hockey game.)

High Net Worth and Ultra High Net Worth (as the industry terms go) individuals actually watch TV at levels far below the norm. But they watch golf.

(Curious anecdote - during the Monday playoff between Tiger and Rocco, trading volume on the NYSE actually decreased to a noticeable degree. What other sport can seize the eyeballs of the wealthy like that?)

The tours know their brands. It isn't just the sport itself, it is also the traditions, the etiquette, the manners. The whole milieu. And a bar brawler that winds up being a cross border fugitive who is caught, extradited, stands trial and is convicted and sentenced to jail is definitely not in harmony with the (very lucrative) image the tours sell their clients.

All of which is a long winded way of saying that no one would try to strip him of titles, because that would ignite a serious controversy. And what the tours likely want most right now is for this to disappear completely from the news as quickly as possible. Minimize its importance. Starve the story of oxygen. They'll do nothing that might prolong it.

This probably sounds a bit elitist (obviously it is not only the wealthy that watch golf, but it is not me that advertisers are doing Rolex ad buys for). Probably also sounds a bit cynical - but there may be elements of truth to it.
