Hands-on architect. Love to run equipment, fix equipment, and every time I see land I imagine a golf course on it.

I also can draw holes, but that is the only art I can do. But that’s what 45 years of mining and management will do to you.

If I won the lottery - I’d go back to working on a maintenance crew.  Having the run of a course with F you money in the bank sounds nice.  I’ve had the run of the course. Just didn’t have the cash.  Lol.

few things more peaceful than cutting greens before or as the sun comes up , or running the 7 gang on Bermuda roughs in the evening.

I’d just drive the range picker if income isn’t a factor in this. There is no better task in a golf operation than this. Anything involving the golf shop, well..... I choose death instead.

Amen to that. There isn’t enough money in the world to make me want to work with golfers.   You can come work maintenance with me !  We will make fun of fat belly’s and bad swings.

I worked at maintaining bunkers for 7 years one 4 hour shift a week. But that became too much like actually working that I switched to picking the range once a week. Get to the range early and practice, then get the cart, listen to an audible book and unwind.

I get to practice and play all I want, it’s not really work and don’t have to deal with the public. It’s perfect. Of course I don’t need the income which makes it more of a hobby.

You work at the wrong course then my friend.  Our Super plays more than anyone snd yet he keeps the course in the best shape it’s been in years.

That is awesome. Why they don't let the managers of a course play their own course i'll never understand. Good for your club.

Our Super and Assistant both get to play in our Men’s League every week (they have playing privileges other days as well) and they get tossed in with a random group and get to meet everyone and talk with the members. It’s been great for the club. They’re not usually the people members interact with, but this gives them some face time.

As for me, I’d most likely be back in the fitting and building side of things. I did it for about 10 years already.

Congratulations to you and your club,  that is an extremely generous move in my opinion. I sincerely thank you for including them in your club instead of overlooking them as peons.

Currently on a 2nd career and I’m an Asst Superintendent. Absolutely love it. I work my butt off and 50-60 hour weeks aren’t out of the norm. But get to pick the kid up from school most days, play golf 1x a week and hit the range 1-2x a week.

Not sure I’d want to be a Super and when I retire I want to do 3 days a week somewhere 4 hours a day. Mow greens or 1st cut or something, wash the mower then boogie.

Would be great to see the architect out there every day working on the course. Seems not many see the project from start to finish anymore. Most players don't notice, but the ones with discerning eyes can tell.

I'm surprised no one said it but I'd caddie, not a club looper but working with a pro, I'm not saying like top 10 either just a pro. I could definitely use the constant walking but being a former athlete I can deal with various mentalities, let them hear what they want or bring them back down to earth. Plus I wouldn't mind the travel.

Other option would be making putters, I just love them so I'd make some stuff others can enjoy too.

I would like to be a caddie on a mini-tour. Help a  young pro get launched to the next level. The Latinoamerica Tour would be interesting, both for golf and for a chance to foster more community across North and South America.

But, I would have to learn Spanish. My language background is high school and college French classes (from the previous century!)

Probably something like a VP position for a major equipment manufacturer or a some type of board/director position at a well known country club.  I wouldn't want to be a touring professional because I like to play golf for fun not for work and I wouldn't want to be a teaching pro because you are helping others play golf and not doing a whole lot of your own for leisure.  I would imagine as an executive you would get to play a lot and at a lot of different places but not nearly as demanding a pace as being a touring pro.

If i had a career in golf i would be a social media poster for my local courses with the access to a round or two as payment 😊 since i’m good with computers and new smartphones.  Twitter, fb, insta for example.

or after qualifying as a pro, i would be a dedicated Autistic junior academy coach and also do 1-1 sessions or adults with learning difficulties. Since i think disabilities shouldn't hold people back.

I would probably like to carry the bag for one of the younger golfers i.e your Speith, Rory, or even Colin. Just to be able to see great golf up close would be fantastic.

Probably a graphic designer. I love some of the stuff Vice does and it's the (embarrassing) reason I stick with their balls vs. Snell. Sometimes their stuff can be cringe but I can think of few jobs that would be more fun than just coming up with new packaging designs for gear.

Last weekend I hooked one into the other fairway and came up to it just as an old dude was picking my Vice ball up and inspecting it. I guess he just saw the swirly cursive type on it because he dropped it and said "found your Coca Cola ball."

  • 2 weeks later...

I loved working on the grounds crew growing up. Weed eating, cleaning bunkers, cutting rough, trimming trees and flowers etc. The veterans did the fairways and greens where I worked but I loved the job and outdoors. Loved finishing at 1 or 2 pm every day in the summer.

On the flip side I hated the pro shop grind. Slinging tee times and folding polo shirts. Listening to angry members or green fee payers whine about their slow rounds or the expired coupon they wanted to use on a green fee.

If I didn't have to worry about my bank account then put me on outside service doing carts and picking the range. I've done it at several courses part time for the free golf and it's relaxing compared to what the clubhouse and food service have to deal with. Plus I got to smoke a cigar while picking the range along with a select beverage or 2 and some music on, doesn't get much better

Superintendent No playing or range privileges. You get to work 90 hours per week providing conditions better than those at the masters while your hourly interns have larger paychecks than you. All while watching the shirt folders, range pickers, caddies, and bartenders playing every day.

I’ve never in my life heard of a superintendent with “no playing or range privileges”
