Tony Finau putter switch… (** NO POLITICS **)

Recommended Posts

Anyone notice Tony Finau with a new putter, looks like a Ping Anser to me but I didn’t get a great look at it.  This is the first time I have noticed him with this putter but may have missed something

Interesting take. The only ugly one I remember was the "backstrike" hosel model they made him. He has used a version of this for most of the time, right? Looks pretty good to me.

I am a fan of Tony Finau and believe his swing mechanics is what I need to imitate to get to the next level. However, it appears he is like George Knudson, but I am in that boat too - hit the ball well but no feel with the putter. I think he should change putters as necessary to find something that works.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Weird I checked their Instagram and didn’t see anything political.

Edit: never mind I should’ve googled it instead of checking their Instagram

I'm not seeing it, what did you Google?

Maybe they measure from 90 degrees?  Most putters I would have thought would between 68-72 degrees.  So his would be 68 degrees in old money?  I checked the other putters on the website.  The ones I saw had a lie angle of 20 degrees +/- 3 degrees.  I am sure someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Piretti has a ton of awesome models on their website. Never liked the look of Finau’s putter, but I’d love some of their Limited, Special, Tour, & Workshop putters!

Lazy take on my part... the Matera is beautiful to me, but that backstrike was a taste that hurts my eyes.

You got it right. Ping just being different for no apparent reason. They still list their iron and wood lie angles like everyone else. Seems like it's almost just to get people to do a double take and spend more time looking at their stuff.

Did you have a good experience with them? I was custom fitted by them and it was the worst experience I've ever had in 20 years of competitive golf. "Custom fitting" was just trying the putters they had in stock. The owner showed up 2 hours late to let me in and was a complete a**. He lied about the pricing over the phone then told me the grip I selected was going to be an upcharge after he had already swiped my card. They're unreal.... he loooves to get political on social media as well. They're childish imo and I will never recommend anyone to them.

I haven’t been fitted by them. But I have bought from  the website.  So I cannot speak to any fitting experience.  But I also wouldn’t really assume they even did fittings.  Boutique makers usually rely on the person to know what they want , which is opposite of say seemore ,  LAB etc who thrive on people who are lost and  who don’t know what they need.  Expectations are key.  If they sold you a fitting I understand. If you went to buy a putter and assumed that meant a fitting , that’s not really their fault.  I’d they advertise custom fittings then  yes. That’s bad wording. When I’m certain they mean length loft and lie angle only . That’s just stuck in older times.  Today folks expect trackman or Sam.

But I’d agree that politics are best  saved for folks you know , and punctual time keeping is also a pet peeve of mine.  Grip upcharges are pretty much a given anywhere.  Because some grips are stupid expensive.  There is no free lunch.

please don’t take that as a jab. Or me even defending them. I don’t know the owner personally.  At all. But I do usually disagree with folks expectations at the retail level.  People who produce things like this work on tiny margins. To give you all you wanted the putter probably needed to go up in price 30 % at least to stay in the black. Time is $. But again.  No excuse fo being late with no call , That id walk over. So no qualms there.
