Best sleeper fairway wood of all time.

I have been playing for 30 years now, and fairway woods have been by far the hardest spot in the bag to fill.

My miss is usually left and I am pretty shallow through impact, so closed. deeper faces have always been a turnoff.

I have found numerous iron sets, drivers, wedges, and putters that I felt were perfect in looks and performance, but have always had to settle for 'close enough' in fairway woods. I also believe, and it is my opinion only, that long heel-toe faced, shallow fairway woods are easier to hook in my hands,

A couple of months ago, I picked up a 3 wood on a whim from the used discount rack. I just wanted the shaft, but for giggles I figured that I would hit it a few times before pulling it. The small, not exactly shallow head made me guess it would be an unforgiving, low line-driving hitting machine. I was wrong. Great trajectory, very forgiving (for it's size), and pretty hot at launch is the best way to describe the results.

So, after 30 years of looking, I am declaring the Adams BTY fairway woods the most perfect that I have ever tried (and I have tried a bunch.) Square to open face angles, tall enough to feel at ease of a tee, and easy to launch from the fairway. The smaller head also makes it much easier to hit from less than stellar lies.

If anyone remembers the Cobra Speed Pro X-ST, the BTY is very similar in size, but orders of magnitude better in forgiveness and trajectory.

If you like a shorter heel-toe face length, easy launch without an shallow face, and anything but closed face, then you owe it to yourself to pick up one to try. They can be had for cheap right now and I plan of getting a backup for each of the 3 I have.

I was actually going to say the BTY and the RPM LP. I had both for years.

I have the Strong 3, 3, 4, 5, and 7 wood RPM LP (all neutral) heads in the club graveyard, and I have played them off and on, but they are a little shallow for my liking, especially off the tee.

Callaway razr fit went way under the radar. I believe it came out about the same time as the RBZ. The razr fit was just as long, was forgiving, and had a nice small profile.

I'll name one that NOBODY else will name: the Ping Zing 2, Ping's original metal wood.

For those of you that are a bit older, you'll remember that Ping waited a LONG time before they came out with a metal wood, and when they did, the Zing 2's were considered by most to be intensely ugly compared to others of the day; I don't think they ever sold in large numbers, and it took Ping a long time to become a big deal again in the metal wood market. But they were really easy to hit, especially off a tight lie and the few of us that tried them stayed with them for quite awhile. Until the TiSi's came out...

XR 3deep. If a 55.5 lie angle and open face angle + deep head suit your eye. The matte black finish is lovely. No alignment aid

This rocket launcher is world class and was heavily slept on. But it has to fit what you're looking for. I got what would resemble tour van specs for what I needed in a retail head. Paired with Tour Ad TP. It's as good as a fairway will get for me. I have hit distances and flights with this club that I never hit even in my best days.

Its just a solid club. Only reason I haven't moved over to an M2 tour. 3 years thus far as firmly in my bag, easily will get 3 more.

Agree on the Callaway Pro heads in several models. XHot Pro, X2Hot Pro or the XR Pro. Players fixate on whether the club looks open or closed. I find lie angle is as big if not a bigger factor. So many upright fairway woods made to accommodate swings coming down above the plane and designed to reduce the slice by raising your hands and aiming the club more left at impact. I find them awkward to hit consistently and easy to duck hook.

Give me a 55 or 56 degree lie angle and I won't hook it. Beyond that I don't go for shallow face or too deep. Like them moderate so I can like the look off turf or tee. That's why I am eyeing the new Steelhead 3+ or 4+, both of which are 1.5 to 2 degrees flatter than the standard 3 or 5. I bet I will have no trouble elevating that 13.5 degree 3+ because these clubs tend to get the ball up anyway. And I am a fan of the cambered sole.

A funny thing is as I read through this thread there are probably 30 different Fairway Woods people are saying that is the best sleeper Fairway Wood of all time. Are there really that many? If there are that many they all can't be the greatest of all time can they?
