What is up with Rory McIlroy?

Draw Driver

Recommended Posts

Rory gotta go back the hood in Holywood yo!

Train with the young hungry golfers on the beat up muni with burnt out brown patches on the greens.

Drink out the water fountain and eat a hunk of bread and cheese for lunch. Not grilled trout over basmati rice and coconut water.

Stand freezing under the rain with muddy soaked shoes with just some sheep and a cow as fans looking on. Not in the warm Jupiter sun surrounded by coaches and trainers running analysis software on their iPads.

Gotta go back home where it all started. Eye of the Tiger yo!

He had quite a bit of backspin on that shot when it hit the flag so I think it would have been a good shot at birdie. As far as the rest of the round it was because of that shot. He probably would have birdied a couple more had he got it done on #15 but the momentum was killed with the bogey. Happens to almost everyone when you get the s+it end of the stick. Just the mental part of the game we like so much.

it happens to the also rans, it doesnt happen to Jack or Tiger. Why Rory hasnt won a major in forever encapsulated in that one bad break. Doesnt have the mental game.

He doesn't have the passion he once had. He's grown up and has other responsibilities. I'm not saying he doesn't want to be the best, again. I am saying he spent his whole life getting to the top and spent almost every conscious moment on golf. Now, he's a grown asse d man who has a family and more responsibility than ever and doesn't have the time nor inclination to be that devoted again. As much as he says he wants to, he can't.

It's a much larger struggle to stay on top than to get there.

The dude just ripped his shirt apart in anger, and your first sentence is “He doesn’t have the passion…”????

Do you think shirt ripping at 18 is an everyday, normal, no big deal occurrence? 😬

There's a huge difference in being pissed at yourself because you can't perform to expectations vs. living, breathing, and foregoing everything else in your life to get back to and stay on top.

Not saying he's wrong to have a life and congrats to him for doing what he's done by the age of 30 yoa. But he'll never regain his prior championship form (at least on a consistent basis) until he re-prioritizes his time and efforts like he did a decade or so ago.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

If Rory got into an accident and heaven forbid it doesn’t happen but I’m trying to do an analogy to Tiger. Do we think he would have the same desire and passion as Tiger to get back to playing?  I do not think so.

This is the area where I think Jordan Spieth is still the best of today's crop.  He may not be back there yet, but he's got the killer mentality.  He also has some magic in his game.

I've said all along he needs to find a way to care less about the outcome. He's at his best when he doesn't gaf.

Unfortunately we're well past that now. He tries all sorts of ways to talk himself into a new frame of mind, but it never works. He's wasted the best years of his career because of his mental fragility and now young guns like Morikawa and Koepka are in his head.

You do know that Rory is exactly 1 year older than Koepka, right?

He flew the green on 18 today with a SW. Still not good with wedges.

I didn’t see but sounds about right lol.  Seems to be really solid when around the green. Saw he went to the high bounce MG3s.

100% agreed.  I don't think he could have been any more ready for this.  Putting looking good.  Working with Rotella.  Seemed confident in his new driver setup.  This is right up there with The Open at Royal Portrush where he crapped the bed in the first round.  I am a massive Rory fan and always laughed at the naysayers who said he'll never win another major...but to be honest I am reluctantly coming around to that POV.

I'm not even sure it's all mental.  For all the hoopla about him being "golf's greatest driver" he sure missed a lot of fairways on Thursday.  For every astonishing, jaw-dropping drive like the 18th at Austin a few weeks back there are performances like this year at Augusta and the Players where he could barely hit a fairway with a 3 wood.

Just throwing it out there for debate and I'll probably get flamed but...is his swing with it's full release just a little too timing dependent for the pressure cooker of majors?  Obviously when he is on it's a thing of beauty and he is unbeatable but add in the mounting expectations and the more difficult conditions of majors and he's struggling.  Again I could be totally wrong here but to me it just seems players like Scottie, Rahm, Koepka who are more fade based players seem to be better setup for the grind of majors.
