That weekend leaderboard was indicative of how great Royal St George was. Cream of the crop rose to the top.  Bomb and gougers go elsewhere.

RSG is never going to be tossed out of the rotation. It's the venue outside of Scotland which has hosted the most Opens. 

 

The course was never going to be firm and fast this year because of all the heavy rain that had fallen over the course in the last few months and June saw more than double the average rain falling over the course. It was a great Championship, R&A will be happy with how this week turned out with a fine winner being crowned.

 

Well done to Collin Morikawa for his fabulous display of domineering iron play this week. He will be seen as one of the finest winners of the Championship I'm sure of that.

My last four takes of the Open.

 

1. What's surprising to me is all of this talk of RSG being relatively easier... Weather great, fairways wide, bunkers off tee not in play much, greens receptive, etc.... And still a lot of top players barely broke par.  Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a tour of a lot of mediocrity vs a tour of a lot of depth.

 

2. It's getting more and more difficult to stay interested in Rory.  His game has become quite boring.  Not far behind him is JT.

 

3. Koepka's dominance of Brooksy in majors continues.

 

4.  Regardless of the course.  It's still a major, still has nerves, and Morikawa flat out dominated today.  Impressive round and win.

No, This was a great venue and event on the scale as measured by the final arbiter of golf viewing value…

 

 

It was dope to watch!

 

You could see some guys BK and Rahmbo and JS going after it but CM just too strong.

 

You see the wedges and long iron CM was hitting? Other guys couldn’t touch that. 

 

BK would have been right there, too bad he crapped out yesterday

That 31-hole bogey free streak to close out the championship was mightily impressive which is the third longest in major history.

The solution is to narrow the fairways and grow the rough. Sort of like a US Open.  But it won't happen that way.

I disagree completely, greenskeepers and Superintendents don't get to control the weather. 
 

The tournament itself was very good. Of course on WRX that means it was trash to many, lol.

Glad Morikawa won on his Open debut.  He was rock solid.  Sorry for Louis again, and if Rahm had displayed only an ok putting performance he would have won today.  But golf is like that.

IMO it wasn't that great of a tournament. Very little drama. No real tough shots that if you miss could derail your round. Slow soft greens made for a course that played like a low tier PGA event. Course was defenseless vs today's players and most of the bunkers weren't even in play unless you totally hit a Word not allowed shot. Course was one of those that there isn't really any huge numbers out there unless you totally mess up but hard enough that you aren't going to be able to go super low and catch people.

CW seems to have an advantage when everyone else in the field is playing a course they rarely see. It seems to magnify his approach shot advantage and minimize his putting limits. He won this tourney with great iron play on a course that only rewarded length if you kept it out of the crop height rough.  And his par saving putting was fantastic.  He has addressed many of his weaknesses and like Rahm and Koepka keeps bringing it in big events. The next decade should be fun to watch in the majors.

Congrats to Collin Morikawa on his win today.  He was mature far beyond his years & his winner's speech was great.  He is well spoken & super easy to like.  He just could not be denied the win today.  Hope he brings home the gold in the Olympics!

Entertaining tournament, despite having to rip up my 36-1 Louis ticket...maybe next time I'll take shorter odds and take him for a top 5 finish!

 

Morikawa is the best iron player I can recall...didn't seem to miss one all weekend.  Maybe Sergio was as good?

 

Links courses are set up for bad weather...if they toughened them up, they'd be unplayable in your typical wretched English weather.

This was his first time playing The Open and a course he rarely sees as well. Furthermore, they are all playing the same course at the end of the day.

I think if Speith had made the putt on 17 it could have been different. CM stripped everything though. Nice win. Good guy too.

I dont know if any wrx'ers have looked at a map, but its the only venue anywhere near London. Imo you have to play one Open near London every ten years surely, and if not at RSG it's not obvious to me where you would go.. The only one I can think of Is Cinque Ports next door, which some of you will know has held it before and is to most people the superior golf course.
