As others have said, the craziest thing is that nobody really knows what Brooks's wrist is like. All Reed had to do was STFU or, even better, make a team player-oriented statement.

Exactly. Forget for a second any of the politics/reputation/likeability stuff and look at it purely from a strategic standpoint. If Reed ended up on the team and got his a** whooped, or had to be benched most of the time, everyone would be asking the VERY logical question "why on earth did you pick someone with a recent severe respiratory illness?". Hindsight clearly favors not picking the medical liability. 

Reed either knew this would hurt his chances and made a severe PR misstep, or he didn't think it would and he is an entitled idiot.

I would be thinking that behind closed doors Stricker, is quite happy that Reed has come out and behaved like this. Stricker is making a team, someone that behaves like that is not someone that you want on a team.

I'm trying to think of one US RC captain, in the modern era, who was as good as Seve or Tony Jacklin.  One with the right combination of major championship resume, charisma, showmanship, leadership, controlled ferocity, mastery of psychology, and intelligence.  It used to be that the US Ryder Cup process was to choose a PGA Championship winner as captain and if we got the other characteristics then, hey, great.  Now with Stricker, we don't even get that.

 

Stricker is an eagle scout in the way he is doggedly going about the job as captain in yeomenlike fashion.  For comparison, I don't think that Seve and Tony would've even considered joining the boy scouts.  I'm unsure an eagle scout is what the USA needs right now, but we'll see in a couple of weeks.

I think Stricker is thrilled that Reed had medical issues and could use that to fall back on. Because Reed just proved why Stricker probably doesn't want him anywhere NEAR the team room. Guy is an absolute tool and I'm even more sick of him than I am of Bryson.

 

People who still think the RC is only about picking the best players or the best ranked players or the players with the best stats hasn't been paying attention to the Euro teams over the last....forever years.

New Balance the best. One time, I was waking right on 42nd Street and 3rd Avenue and stepped in dog doo 😱

The sneakers were a lost cause but there’s a Foot Locker right there! So, I take off my dog doo sneakers right outside the door, call the guy over and tell him to bring me a plastic bag. I throw them out, go in and these bastids don’t have my model of New Balance. So I bought these. They ok but nowhere near the quality and comfort of New Balance!

 

I also got bunch of actual shoes, mostly Ecco but since covid, I thing I wore shoes like 3 times lol

Until the ‘18 Ryder Cup I was in the “he’s a jerk but he’s our winning jerk” camp. Had heard on here and through messages some really nice stories about him and believe them. But he and his “camp” have this other side that just kept coming out and the comments and falsehoods from him after France were  too much for me.  He likes to play the victim and play up being the victim and isn’t a team player which, yes, is an integral part of being on a Ryder Cup …. team. 
 

I agree with the above - Euros have had plenty of talent but chemistry is a thing and still the component the task force (lol) never seemed to address -being more concerned with some way of guaranteeing captaincy succession.

Reed being seriously sick should be the only reason he's not on the team. He's a gritty player with a great short game. Perfect for team play. If Reed had been healthy not picking him would have been a huge mistake. 
 

That said, he (likely his circle) have some character flaws. Ive seen numerous interviews with his parents and sister who remain classy even though he's shut them out of his life. Ive seen almost nothing from his wife or brother in law who are probably the snakes in the grass. His wife just oozes low class and his brother in law comes off sketchy. Maybe he's surrounding himself with people of similar character but if his family is an indication I'd say no.  
 

The "players hate him" tag is not as bad as some would make out. There's been enough commentary from other players that contradict it. Ive seen him have many conversations with players laughing and joking around. He's not universally hated.

I’m not sure why some commentators want to blame Reed’s “team” as a way lessen his culpability for making idiotic statements, tweets, etc.  It is his “team”.  He needs to own what his team says, does, or tweets.  If not, he’s an even bigger tool than I think he is.

Koepka doesn't have the maturity or experience to be inserted as a Ryder Cup Captain - he's a long ways from being relevant to that discussion.

I think the Euros have the mental edge. Will win by 3 points coz the wind will howl, the rain will pelt down and the Amers will moan and grone/grown/groan.  The Amer's rain jackets will leak, the balls will wobble and the Kohler toilets will back up. 

 

Coz the weather will be severe the event will welcome few attendees coz all must come from far away as no one lives in that part of the world.  With hardly any patrons in the stands or along the fairways, the pompous Amers will seek out handwarmers, hoodies and mittens.  Thus, looking the fool, the Amers will collapse.

Tiger Woods has said that Steve Stricker has perhaps the most fire of just about anyone out on tour, and is one of the most competitive people there is.  Phil has said similar.  He just doesn't outwardly show it, so people think that he's just this ho-hum guy who is just hanging with his buddies on the golf course.

 

DJ gets this same comparison - because he doesn't outwardly show emotion and looks almost carefree on the golf course, people think he doesn't care about his performance.  Which, of course, couldnt be farther from the truth.

 

You want team leaders whom you respect.  Everybody respects Steve.  You can't say that about a lot of guys on Tour.

This is way out there, but I'm looking ahead to some of the future Ryder Cup venues and here are some captain predictions: I've got Phil/Sergio as Captains in 2025, Mcdowell at Adare Manor in 2027, depending on his health Tiger will either be the Captain in 2023 or 2029. 2037 Ryder Cup is at Congressional, and at that point I think Rory Mcilroy will be ready to be a Captain. He'll be 48 and that's older then Thomas Bjorn was in 2018. Maybe Rory and Brooks in 2037?!?!

He's literally the only guy the US has had in the past 20 years who was comfortable being Tiger Woods' partner in team competitions.  Almost everyone else was too afraid or too intimidated.

 

Why would you be "baffled" at how he got the RC captain job?
