RIP Byron Morgan

I just heard the news that Byron passed away. He made great sticks and was a real pleasure to chat with when needed.

Very sad news indeed.  Thank you for passing along.  I only owned one of his putters for a while, a beautiful copper Channel Islands.  He will certainly be missed and his contributions won't be forgotten.

Definitely very sad, I had 1 of his putters briefly and while it didn't last long in my collection it started my love and addiction for putters. I always admired his work as it inspired a lot of the custom putters I had built. I was planning on buying a custom from him in the future as a reminder of what started my collection.

I bought 4 putters from him through the years and met him at his Huntington Beach shop in 2015. Wonderful guy.

I'm sadden by the news. Even though I knew Byron was not doing well, I always thought he'd pull through and would return to make putters. I own 3 Byron Morgan sticks. 

 

My journey with Byron began in 2013. I was getting into custom putters. Byron's DH89 was the only legitimate alternative to Scotty 009. And I read Tai's comparison thread through and through (https://www.golfwrx.com/46467/scotty-cameron-009-vs-byron-morgan-dh89/)

 

I finally pulled the trigger in Thanksgiving 2013. I remember trying to finalize the order on Black Friday while out shopping with the family. I still remember the chaos. And I thought I was nuts to spend that much money on a golf club. LOL. 

 

A few years later, I custom ordered a 615 with "tai treatment" in later 2017. I want it exactly like Tiger's, i.e. vertical stamps, cherry bomb, etc. I played it in 2018. And guess what, 2018 is also the year Tiger got back into shape and won a few tournaments. 

 

I guess my only regret is not getting a 620. Always thought I'd have time.

I received this news, about 4 hours ago and the words have not yet come to describe the loss.  He was a friend for the better part of the last 25 years and incredibly, we never met face to face.  Byron Morgan did more to influence and impact my world than anyone who is not a blood relative. 

His work and sheer presence in the putter world will be missed beyond words.

Rest in peace, my friend.

I just got my first custom a few months ago after many years of window shopping. At first I was a bit bummed the cavity stamping was smaller than the putter I was trying to replicate but soon realized Byron knew what he was doing and the way he did it looked better. I was looking forward to ordering more putters but sadly will not have the opportunity for him to make me another.

A few years ago I emailed Byron a question regarding his headcovers. The next day at dinner my phone rings. I don’t bother to answer but my wife does. “There’s guy named Byron Morgan on the phone for you.” You’d think someone told a kid that Santa was in the phone for them haha. Nice guy. Real chill but chatty at the same time. Gave me a solid 15 minutes of his time while I nerded out and never gave the impression he needed to go.

Was Byron the sole builder of his putters? Or did he have a business partner/ team? Hopefully his love for the business and his company continues.

Anything ‘Byron Morgan’ or ‘Byron Design’, yes it was a one man show. He did outsource a few finishes and had a machine shop mill the roughed heads but from that point it was all Byron. Older putters under the John Byron name were under the partnership of John Ortega and Byron Morgan.

That’s an absolute bummer. He built me two putters over the years and he was such a nice man to talk with.  Really loved his craft and he was spectacular at it.  Rest easy my friend, you will be missed.

He fitted me to a 006 at his HB studio many moons ago. He was a gentleman of the highest order and his knowledge and craftsmanship were legendary. I still have 3 of his John Byron era putters. My only regret is never having him make me a DH89. I've been sad all day. RIP.

This news saddens me. I had the good fortune of living near his shop when he was in Huntington Beach.  I walked into his shop without an appointment and we spent a good 15-20 minutes together.  We talked about putters and I putted on his indoor green.  I’m sure he was busy, but he had no qualms about spending time with me that day. I ordered a DH89 in mystic pearl finish in 2014 and it’s still my gamer today.  It’s such a good putter from a true gentleman and expert craftsman. RIP Byron. You will not be forgotten…

Top notch artisan and truly an expert at his craft. He will be sorely missed. I just wish I had gotten the chance to meet the man in the flesh, as many who knew him personally continue to sing his praises as a friend. Rest easy, Byron.

I always wished I would have been able to meet Byron in person.  I first learned of him when John Byron putters came out.  My love for his designs only grew through what must be close to twenty five years now.  We shared many phone calls and emails.  Oddly he only wanted to talk about how the waves were in Hawaii and hoped that he'd come back again. I told him I'd always be available for a round of golf but my surfing days were long behind me.  Through the years I was fortunate to have him make me several putters. I always told him upon receiving them that they were too pretty to use. He'd laugh and tell me beat them up and send them back for a refinish! His John Byrons and custom Byron Morgan's have always been the gems of my collection. I will truly miss Byron. I was just thinking it's Christmas soon and I need to get him his mac nuts, chocolate and coffee care package.  I wish I had gotten around to doing that review on the last putter he made for me so he could see it.  A full on custom with twisty neck and sound slot.  An amazing putter that rolls incredibly well and what was so special is I told him to just do his thing because nothing I could ask him for would measure up to his mind.  My heart hurts at the loss of one of the great putter makers and someone who I felt had become a friend to me.  I hope he gets to ride that big wave up there.  Aloha Oe Byron.  Till me meet one day.
