Gap Wedge between 46-52: do you carry and do you use?

RoyalMustang

Recommended Posts

I carry a 52* but my other wedges are 47 and 58. I bag a Miura K grind as of now. It is really a great multipurpose grind. Love it as I can tend to get steep.

I do not have as big of a gap as you though. My 47 travels about 125-130, the gap goes 105-110, and the 58 goes about 90. With 20 yard gaps, it leaves plenty of room for choking down or manufacturing shots which I prefer stylistically without drastic differences in swings.

I think if I found myself with 30 yard gaps I might consider playing a 46, 50,55, 60

Just got new irons, and have my PW and AW at 42.5 and 46.5. I had my 52 and 56 bent to 50 and 54, so I have consistent 4 degree gaps (and 3.5 going from cavity back AW to blade gap wedge). Not excited about what that means for bounce as I'm a little steep, but it's a stopgap until I get new wedges next spring.

My distances aren't set in stone right now. I have only been playing about a year and a half, I have some speed but I think my swing has gotten a little steeper, and I am hitting a bit more down on the ball with my well struck shots giving me more height, more spin, and a little less distance than I was getting before. This doesn't seem like a bad thing but I'm adjusting.

PW - is a pretty solid 140 carry - I use this pretty much as only a full swing club

GW - is around 127 based on the last couple times I hit a full shot with it. But I rarely hit full shots with this club. I use it mostly at a 3/4 swing for 100 yard shots or I have been chipping greenside with it as much as possible. Given that it is almost never a full swing club though, I wish I got another MD4 instead of the set matching GW.

54 - on a full swing goes sky high and 110 yards. A bit further out of the rough. I use this for pitches 80 yards and in though mostly. But it sees most of it's use in the 60-30 yard shot range. I can repeat the swing needed for this much better with this club than any other. But right around the green I will go back to my GW or 8 Iron for chips if I'm not short sided

58 - I have no idea what the full swing yardage on this club is. I have been leaving it home lately. My home course does not put me an many situations that require it. I bring it when I ride or am and a different course. If I have to get up and over something or if i've got a green that is above me head I will give this club a shot. But its use has been steadily decreasing for me.

I'm looking for new irons because I need stiffer and heavier shafts so my set up may have to change. But I think I will always use some type of gw between my pw and sw.

I was a 46-52-58 guy for a few years.  Constantly found myself needing more of a 50 and 54 with the yardages of courses I play.  I went to a 46-50-54-58 setup this year and it's been wonderful.  No more half swings or so many 'feel' swings.  I still need to do them occasionally depending on wind, etc but not nearly like I was in previous years.

What is the consensus on carrying a 49-50 degree wedge?  Do you carry one?  I hit my 46 degree 140-145 on a full swing and 130 if I choke down a lot and swing easy.  My 52 degree is pretty much a 110-115 club.  I wouldn't mind a traditional full-swing 120 yard 49-50 degree PW, but do any of you carry one between your 46 and 52?  This is the largest gap in lofts in my iron set yet it is arguably a very important slot.

I keep a 5* gap between all my wedges. I play 45* PW, a 50* GW, and 55* SW, and a 60* LW. This gives me about a 15yd gap between each on full shots and really good options around the green. To find your loft gaps determine the highest loft wedge you want to play, then subtract the lost of your PW from it. Take the difference and divide it by how many other wedges you want. So if you want a 60* as your highest wedge, and your PW is 45* you have a 15* gap between them. If you wanted to play one wedge between them, divide 15* by two (the number of wedges in addition to your PW). That's 7.5* so just add that to 45* and you get 52.5. If you wanted to carry three wedges in addition to your PW then divide 15* by three. That is 5*, so add 5* to 45* gets you 50*, and add 5* to that and you get 55*. Give or take a degree this should give you good consistant gaps on the bottom end of your bag.

When playing my MP37s or Ram FX Nickels, both of which have a 47* PW at the moment, I've been using a 52* GW.  It's about the highest loft I care to use for full shots; inside that, I start manipulating the partial shots.  Just my preference.

Maybe bend you 52° strong to 51° just be aware bounce will change 1° as well. 30 yard gap is huge especially in scoring clubs. Might be a good idea to get fit and get your gaps figured out with your wedges since this is such an important area of the bag.

I just reused some old clubs from a past set. My previous set had a 48* wedge and my current set has a PW that is 45* so I took some old (good condition) Mizuno MP-R wedges and adjusted the lie to give me certain gaps.

my 52* had 7* of bounce. I had it bent to

50* with 5* of bounce

my 58* had 10* of bounce. I had it bent to

55* with 7* of bounce

I threw my old 60* Vokey with 12* bounce back in the bag for traps.

I like the low bounce for full shots, and chips around the green. I feel I can do better from tight lies that way.

I think determining what you like to use for chipping around the greens can help when it comes to bounce/loft/grinds. I know many people like a low bounce lob (60*) and a higher bounce or versatile grind for sand traps. I happen to prefer a  very low bounce for my wedges and a high bounce sand wedge. I like to keep my sand wedge for sand only and do not look for any special grinds, but I like Low bounce wedges for the collar or just off the green. I can open up my 55* with 7* of bounce and play it as a lob and hit flop shots  if needed, but it still gives me the distance window I’m looking for with full shots from about 100 yards out.

Based on others feedback...I carry more then most, but as you mentioned, it's an important shot.  My distances are same as yours, and most of the courses I play are shorter, so I'd rather carry 1 more scoring club, and hit full shots, rather than carrying a longer iron that I would use 1-2 times a round...if that.  Maybe I'm wrong in my reasoning, but my short game is the weaker part of my game, so I'd rather take smoother, yet full swings, and not have to worry as much about touch and feel.....I know you can make an argument that having too many only makes it worse, but so be it.

My pw is bent to 45* for my 140 ish club.  Then have a cbx2 48* w/ the same shaft as my irons to play 125-130, which I use as a specialty wedge primarily for full shots.  Then 52(110-115) , 56(100-105) , & 60* w/ softer shafts for more spin and higher launch.

I somehow missed this thread after a revived a similar thread talking about pitching wedges.

My PW is 45 degrees, but goes 145-50. I carry a 50 degree that goes 124 which is a massive gap between that and my set PW. The problem with set pitching wedges on distance irons (I play 919 Hot Metal Pros) is they go way too far to transition into a traditional blade wedge setup. I'm going to pick up a 46 degree wedge, likely a Vokey, which I'm hoping will go about 135 to fill that gap. I go from a 5 wood to a 4 hybrid, so I have extra room at the bottom of the bag for more wedges.

My 620MB PW is 47*  and other wedges are 52/8 and 58/8.  Each of them match the 36" length of 9i.  Though my 52* is used for full shots it's called SW because it's also used for long bunker shots by opening the face adding bounce.

My 620 club heads have weaker lofts which I am use to so the above spread works for me.  I wouldn't suggest it to others though because of the weaker lofts and only 2 wedges.  I suspect sometime in the future people will lobby for carrying a second bag filled with wedges.  If I am still alive I will be laughing my azzzz off cause index won't be any lower than it is today.

My pw is 46, about 125 yds,

Then a 50 that i hit 105 to 115

Next is a 55 for about 95 to 100

Last I use a 60 for various yardages but 85 would be a full swing

I play a blade 47 PW bent to 46. I go back and forth between a 52/58 wedge setup and 50/54/58 wedge setup I use more often (without a 5 wood).

My first reaction though was how do you have such a big gap between 46 and 52. If you hit the 46 145 you should be hitting that 52 easily 125-130. What is going on with your PW?

I use my gap wedge all the time. It's the wedge from my set of Cleveland 588 mt's, 49°. It's my go to club for the 80-90 yard shot. I have a Cleveland 588 rtx cb 2.0 that I should hit about 80 yards but my main miss is thin and I find myself having trouble dialing in that wedge, so it's mainly used for chipping. I also have a 60° that I rarely use and honestly could probably take out of my bag, or swap out for a 3 wood.

I have carried 4 wedges for quite a while. For "full" shots, I get the following:

46* PW = 115 (choked down 1" = 107-110)

50* GW = 105 (97-100)

54* SW = 90 (80-85)

58* LW = 75 (65-70)

That setup gives me a single swing for pretty much any distance between 65 and 115 yards, simply by choking down a wedge if I need to. With these clubs, my "full" swing is really a smooth 3/4 motion that pretty much guarantees solid contact.

Ditto. Gap wedge is key club for me. I use it for a lot of shots. Took a half-day short game school and the pro helped a lot on improving consistency. A nice 3/4 swing helps me a lot.

Specs on my irons are super old-school (50* PW). I like the look and feel of a set pitching wedge vs a specialist wedge more for full shots and that slot in the back is used primarily for full or near full shots. I only very rarely will play a full-ish swing with the SW/LW and and therefor fine with slightly larger gaps. No right answer on proper set makeup and gapping, it’s all about finding what works for you.

He uses older sets. So 46* pw is standard. 52 gap and 56/58 other wedge.

Often thought to go 50,54,58 but never got around to it and wedges are heavy to carry walking.

He grew up with the 46,52,56 gaping and is comfortable adjusting accordingly.
