Does game a 3 iron anymore?

I haven’t Gamed a 3 iron in years. I recently got a set of 716MB 3-PW. I was very reluctant to play the 3 iron, but I put it in the bag anyway. After a couple of so-so shots, I pured one on long par 4 Into the wind. I gotta say it’s staying in the bag, at least for now. Anyone else gaming a 3 iron? Your thoughts?

Love my 3 iron. Tried to take it out of the bag a couple of times for a hybrid, because everyone said I should... not a fan in the hybrids.

3 iron comes in handy when playing tight tree lined courses.   If a tee shot goes astray,  nice to know I have option to hit/curve low line drive out of trees.   I cannot confidently hit low liners with a hybrid.

 

Get me on a more open course though and the 3 iron stays home.

Your 3 iron is 21* loft, which is a modern 4 iron and sometimes close to a 5 iron. Like anything, if you practice and have the speed go for it.

You have to define what a 3 iron is first. My "4 iron" is 21 degrees. That is the same loft as many 3 irons today and almost all of the 3 irons of 10 years ago.

I have an 18.5* SGI, which is kind of a blend of long iron and hybrid, but looks more "iron-ish". I hit it from the deck quite often.

A 3i Mizuno MP18 Fli Hi, so technically probably closer to a 3h than a true 3i but I really like it. I can launch it pretty high when needed but can also hit lower bullets with it too.

All hybrids now... just easier to hit - seems like even the tour players are doing similar slowly.

Depends for me, I carry 13 clubs right now and know I can throw either an extra wedge in there or carry a hybrid or 3 iron. I remembered being on a longer par 3 wishing I had a 3 iron but most often, I rarely use it. It is a good option if you play a course requiring it more often than not.

I still carry a 2 iron on some courses and a 3 iron all the time. I do it solely for the intimidation factor and always tee off on number one with it to just let everyone in the foursome know I’m better than them.

I have a 3 iron (21 degrees) in my T100 set. I had no reason not to get it, even though the "standard" T100 set was presented as 4-PW.

 

It's a great club to have in the bag - useful from tees, fairways, and the woods.

I game a 3-iron in my set of TM Tour Preferred MC’s/MB’s and love it for extra control off the Tee for long Par 3’s or tight Par 4’s/5’s and occasional 2nd shots on long Par 5’s! My 3-iron is 20* and 4-iron is 23*. Tried to use the set as 4-PW and replace the 3-iron’s shots with 3W or Hybrid 4 (20*), but just not the same.

I have a 20 degree iron with a 4 stamped on the bottom. 921 forged bent a degree strong. It’s hits rockets

i interchange 3 iron (20*) with a hybrid (19*) depending where I play.

My home course is extremely windy links style course so my 3 iron gets frequent usage.

I also have a 18* driving iron that I use as well.

One of my best friends still carries a 1 & 2 iron and hits them miles off the tee and fairway, not bad for a 60+ year old.

I still play a 3 iron.  I can usually get 190-195 off the deck with it.  My 4 iron is usually my "utility club."  Punching out of trees, bump and runs, narrow fairways where I have to hit low hooded shots.

I carry a 15 degree 2 iron and use it at least a couple times a round. Off the tee its a bomber I can get a lot of roll with it and for me it comes in handy when I need to hit a long high fade. Cant seem to hit a draw with it though. And to be honest I probably would game a 1 iron if I could ever find one but there arent many left handed 1 irons out there...never been able to hit hybrids or woods as consistent as a long irons

Define 3 iron.  If you are gaming an iron that has 21 degrees of loft then yes, you pretty much have a 3 iron (or a 2 iron depending how old it is).

Interesting how many here list their current “ 4 iron “ as a 3 iron because of loft and yet when you flip this subject around to modern lofts many will say that “ my 9 iron goes 160 yards and it’s a 9 iron no matter what loft it is “.    Humans are funny.   And I include myself in that for noticing this.

I carry 712MBs.  I bought them 4-p secondhand.  I benched the 4 for a 712U 3 iron.  It gets the job done for long par 3s, but is sneaky good for bump and runs.  Nothing beats watching the look on your competitors face after you putt it closer with a 3 iron then they can with a high risk wedge!

I've never been good at hitting hybrids, so I've gamed a 3 iron or 3 iron driving iron. Now I have a NCW custom 3 iron in the bag that I keep for tight par 4's, or layups. I don't hit it very high, but the dispersion is tight, rolls out to about 225 or so. I have a 7 wood that I use as my hybrid, it's about 210-225, but a much higher ball flight.

I still play a 3 iron, but my 3 irons range from 20* or 21* to 23.5* (a version of 1980 lofts), depending on the set in question.

I play a Srixon Z565 3 iron and love it off turf or tee.

 

In times past I always gamed a 1 or 2 iron, particularly liked a BeCu Ping Eye2 2 iron.

 

The Srixon is so easy to hit, very forgiving, I've thought about a driving iron but figure this does a similar job, probably a little better off turf.

 

Not a hybrid fan.
