The embarrassment of buying your old set back.

  • sfdoddsy changed the title to The embarrassment of buying your old set back.

You're among friends here.  No reason to feel any shame.

I'd say most of us here have done it.  Or, if not the exact original set, a duplicate of it.  Multiple times, in my case.

I don't do as much of it as I used to, but I still have the old Titleist iron set box from the 80s that my wife refers to as "The Coffin."  When she would see it making its way from the basement to the trunk of the car, she knew that set was dead.  They were headed for the "Play It Again" to be swapped for something else.

Most of it ended for me when one morning I was on the first tee, pulled the headcover off the driver and was startled to see a driver that I had decided to get rid of staring back at me.  It had been a busy week and I had forgotten to swap it out for another one.  I was stuck with it for another day.  I knew then and there I had a "problem."

I should have been more like the friend I played with at that time.  You had to walk through the parking lot to get from the 9th green to the 10th tee.  He kept the backup set in the trunk.  Fully loaded, woods, irons, putter, balls, gloves, tees, umbrella, you name it.  He'd stop, swap one bag for the other and be on to the 10th in a matter of seconds.

Haven't been there with irons as I tend to just keep stuff. But its funny I just sold off my M2 and my Rogue to fund a proper new driver and fit.... so in the meantime threw the ol wilson triton back in the bag, 2 rounds in so far and I'm piping it, and hitting it quite straight. Haha glad I hung onto it I guess, sometimes what your chasing after was there all along 😆😆

For the last couple of years I’ve been playing a combo set of Gen 1 PXG irons

I bought them used and, although not custom fit, they fit me well enough that at age 59 I reached my lowest ever handicap (6).

Did I reward them with a comfy soft pillow when not in use?

No.

Instead I dumped them for a set of sexier, massively improvider, latest thing Gen3s.

Love the look. Love the feel. Love the distance and dispersion on the range.

Alas, I can’t hit them for s***.

Today was a perfect example. I hit every fairway with my driver, but ended up with 5 GIRs.

It’s been two months of swearing.

So I’ve agreed with the buyer of my old set to swap them for my new set.

Kind of embarrassing. But not as embarrassing as my iron play recently.

Anyone else made the resale of shame?

I have only done it when I don't lose money. I would sell the new set to recoup what I could then either buy the old ones back, or find another set.

Being left sometimes means now or never, so I wait to part with stuff because you never know...  🤣

No shame in regearing old gear. Lesson learned.

While not buying back the exact same club, I did at one point over a couple of years buy 4 905R 9.5's with the 76S V2.

Had an iron set that I had gifted to my brother in law that I had liked quite a bit, took it for a spin when I was regripping the set one year and actually wondered why I liked them so much.  As much as I look back fondly at some gear I've had, I keep looking forward for that next magic piece that will change my life for ever, it could be the next purchase, so...

I’ve definitely fallen victim to this and honestly my current set is basically a small upgrade over what I should have never sold my z765 with modus 120tx. I am turning my zx7 into a replica with modus 120tx shaft change I hope soon

I sold a Cobra 4 wood a part of a package deal.  Couple years later, I borrowed some clubs while on a trip and ended up borrowing my old clubs...  including that 4 wood.  I was able to get it back after hitting it extremely well.  That club won't be going anywhere even if it sits in my golf room.

Yep. Just got off the phone from doing exactly this.

loved my srixon z765 irons which I had from first release and played very well with. Sold them when I got injured a few months ago, figuring that I’d need more forgiveness and graphite shaft to help my body, and bought callaway cf16 with recoil.

2 games in and although the apex are nice, just don’t like them anywhere near as much as the srixon.

so apex’s have been sold and I managed to track down my old set, called them and negotiated a price to buy them back. They arrive tomorrow.

thankfully during the process I’m only down by about £30, but I felt very silly.........although I feel a lot better hearing others have done it. This place is like therapy.

I've done it so many times, nothing to be embarrassed about.  It got so bad I pm'ed a BST buyer from a XR16 Pro to ask if he could sell it back to me. Obviously he thought it was hilarious but luckily it didn't work out for him and I got it back.

I’ve always played something for its lifespan and I struggle like heck to ever go back. I’m weird that way I guess. I’ve gone back for the quick hitter but it’s never long term. Kinda like my other relationships I guess. Lol

I just traded in a set of irons and a putter so I could buy new irons. Your post has inspired me to go buy back my old set because I only have three sets of irons in the garage. Ha ha!

Seriously, lots of people have done what you did, myself included!  Sometimes you just don't get along with a club or clubs.

Haven’t had that yet. I’m thinking about buying a second set of my Honma irons because I love them so much.

Honma’s kicked my PXG 0211’s out of the bag almost immediately. I still have my 0211’s though, haven’t sold them yet or anything.

God how many times have I wished I could find an old set or club. It's so easy to convince myself how much better something will be. I had ping g400 3 and 5 woods and just loved them. When the g410s came out I saw that they had a flat setting and convinced myself that was the cure for my occasional hook. I still have the G410s but I don't play them in the flat setting 😉 and honestly have thought about going back to G400s a lot. If the adapters were the same I absolutely would have. Good thing the G425s are surely going to be my solution.

I actually bought back a set from callawaygolfpreowned last year. Traded a set of Apex Pro's for regular Apex. 2 weeks later, the Pro set came into their inventory so I traded them back.

Never bought back a set of irons, I'm not typically a tinkerer with irons. I did strongly consider buying back my OG M1 3-wood. I was a FOOL to ever trade that thing in or replace it, for 2 years it was the best club in my bag. I think I have another keeper now in my SIM Ti 3W, but I went through like 4 different 3-woods and never really loved  any of them. I LOVED my OG M1.... so I sold it like an idiot.

Typical WRX'r move! HA!
