Tell me about your 7 wood.

I’m tinkering with a couple 7 woods in hopes of having something I can hit high and soft from 220+. I think by far I’ve liked the PING G425 7 wood the best. The lowest loft setting really opens the face and gives me a great look at address. Biggest issue I’ve found is that most manufacturers are going to produce 7 woods with a little more upright lie angle and shut face which makes sense for the masses. Have you played around with higher lofted fairway woods and what did you go with?

I am not even In the same universe you’re in.  I have a stone stock Ping 425 aft 7 wood set to 23.5* and I hit it on 2 holes…a 180 yard par 3 and I have a par 4 I call Satan’s xxxx.  The play for me is a 3 wood about 220 off the tee and then my 7 wood into the green.

that all being said, it flies high, lands soft, and it works like a charm.

Well, where do I start?

A colleague moved abroad a couple of months ago and had some old clubs in his garage he was going to throw out. I asked what they were and gave him £20 for the bundle, thinking I could cut them down for my kids.

one of them was a callaway great big Bertha Hawkeye 7 wood (from 1999) with a light regular shaft, and it goes like a missile!

I've since cut it down an inch to see if it takes a bit of yardage off (it doesn’t) but it’s made it feel even better!

the launch is just right, doesn’t spin too much - nothing about it makes any sense, but I now adore it!

I just moved into a 7 wood to try and better fill the spot between 3 wood and 4 iron.  I had been playing a P770 3 iron built as more of a driving iron with a Nippon GOST shaft.

I went with the TSI2 7 wood, turn down to 20.75 with the Tensei AV Raw White 85 TX 2.0 (tipped at 1.5” and just playing standard Titleist length). It’s been the easiest to hit club I’ve ever owned. I bought it for a 240 shot and it does exactly that, I can throw it up in the air and land and hold a green.

This is why I really like the Titleist stuff since they don't seem to ever sit closed as stock and give you a little control over flattening lie angle. I am not a 7w guy, but the TS2 21* is fantastic in C1 for what you're talking about. The PING stuff gets a lot of love there too though, no reason to change that.

I really wanted a 21* TSi3 fairway but they don’t make that loft. I did end up trying the TSi2 and just wasn’t a fan for some reason. The face sat great but I hit it too high even in the lower settings. I couldn’t fit my gaps right with it.

What shaft were you using? I have a TSi2 21 lofted down to 20.75 with a Fuji Rombax P95x and the shaft definitely helps making sure the height isn't too crazy. I've never tried it with any other shaft but the height difference between the Rombax and a Ventus Blue 7x in my TSi2 15 has to be 20 feet.

TaylorMade SIM Max 7 wood with a Diamana BF 70X. Absolutely love it. High launching 235 yard club for me.

Played original Callaway Steelhead 7w (20*) and 9w (24*) with DGX100 Lite steel shafts for over 20 years and took more than my fair share of abuse when I first started playing them.

Switched to a TaylorMade SIM Max 7w with Velocore Red 7s @ 41.5” and SIM Max 9w with Diamana D+ 80s @ 40.75” at the end of this past season to try and get back to my 220 yard 7w and 200 yard 9w distances and I was very pleasantly surprised with both.

Never got along with hybrids or driving irons.  Just hit fairway woods much better.

Ok - my imaginary 22' Seven (7) wood is a 620 MB 21' 3 iron with 92g Tensei AV White tout "S" but a wee 39" long.  If I want 220, this ole man uses his 17' 2 iron with 90g Tensei AV White S at 39.5"

I've carried a 4 wood for at least fifteen years, current is 15.5' adjusted via sleeve.  I have five (5) 4 woods, lofts are 16'-17', different shafts.  One 5 woods at 18'.  Nine (9) wood lofts are 23' - 28' with a shaft slightly longer than its iron counterpart.

I only play adjustable 7 woods due to so many being set up to hook in stock configurations. Mine is a 215-220 club. The key for me was getting a stiff, lower torque shaft since I did not want to boost launch.

Currently have two, a Cobra F9 with an Aldila RIP Phenom 80 stiff and a Callaway Epic Flash with a Diamana Kai’li 80 stiff (the OG Kai’li). I can play them interchangeably. The Cobra is better on ragged golf courses. Any lie and it’s fine.

I am going into Season 12 with some combo of 4W + 7W. (Switched models a couple of times)

My latest is a Rogue 7W that took a little work to get. Got both Rogues near the end of the production cycle. Got 4W used, but no men's 7Ws to be had - sold out quickly. So, I looked at Rogue fairway specs, and found the loft, lie angle and head size identical for men's and women's models. So, I got an almost new women's model and had my clubsmith reshaft it with PX EvenFlow 5.5 (R) shaft.

7W has worked very well.

I did put a couple of grams of tungsten tape in toe (slot in sole) to slow down toe closure. Also, I choke down a half inch which helps flatten the lie just a bit. Only time I hold at full length when I want a draw on a tee shot.

Choking down/trimming shaft is one way to overcome too upright a lie.

Also, for bonded head fairway woods, a clubsmith can tweak the grip alignment so the clubface is a degree open at address.

Callaway UW 21* I swing my driver about 105 and it is a perfect 205-210 club for me. It is just so easy to hit from any lie and it sits completely neutral no left bias. Really nice consistent mid to mid-high trajectory with plenty enough spin to hold greens.  I would put this up against any 21 degree fairway wood and bet it beats it for distance and consistency.

V-Steel 7w (21*) with a Tensei Orange 70TX shaft. I used to use a Quadra Fire RB 6SX shaft (see pic below). Good shaft, but a lI was turning a few too many shots over with it. The heavier, stiffer Tensei works better. I may have lost a few yards with the Tensei (really not sure). but I feel comfortable hitting the 7w into the wind now, which wasn't the case with the Quadra Fire shaft.
