I walked off the golf course today...

The weather here in Chicago has been awesome so I took today off to get a round in as part of a milestone day in life. Booked as a single on a local muni, was paired up with 2 guys and another single. The three were riding while I enjoyed the walk.

Throughout the first 9, one of the guys in the two some was on his cell phone on every hole. At times we waited several minutes for him to finish a call and play his shot. The other guy talked incessantly during others shots and he wasn't too concerned about stepping on someone's line. The group in front was slow as well and the front took just under 2 hours and 45 minutes.

On the 9th green, the cell phone guy took off and we didn't know where he was going. To my chagrin, there was a different guy chipping around, but not at our green. He wasn't from the group behind us and he wasn't from a different hole.

As we headed toward the 10th tee, I asked who this guy was and it was the twosome's friend. They said because it was so slow, they called him and he was joining us. They asked if that was OK and I said I wasn't comfortable with it. One of the guys said that if we get called on it, we can split into a 2 some and they'd play as a 3some. Well now we're about to screw the group behind us on an already slow round and if we get broken up, it's like an additional group being inserted in front of them.

I hit a couple of shots on 10, was very uncomfortable, went to the proshop and picked up a raincheck. I told them I was leaving so they could play as a foursome. Personally, I think they were total a-hats for such a BS move. Why ask if it was OK if they were going to do what they wanted anyway?

What would you have done in this situation?

Crazy stuff happens on occasion when you're a single. I got paired up with another single in Vegas. He's on his cell phone then off it then on again then tells me he'll be right back while we're waiting on the 8th tee. He drives off and comes back 5 minutes later with his friend in the cart. They spend the rest of the round taking about being in jail and upcoming court cases and if the judges assigned to their cases are lenient or tough. But at least it wasn't a fivesome.

Courses around me don't give rainchecks.

If I paid for 18, I'm playing 18.

Not sure I followed it all exactly. So the guy gabbing on the cell phone left after 9? Or did he return and the extra person officially made it a five some? If just swapping one for another on such a busy day I would have sucked it up. But if making it a fivesome I would have bolted too. I'm assumng the fifth guy actually paid for his round in the clubhouse and wasn't just jumping in with his friends for free?

So you're waiting on every single shot, 2:45 front, and adding a 5th is a problem? I wouldn't mind an addition if it's already slow.

If you can't keep a 2:45 pace, for 9, as a 5-some, 6-some or 7-some, your group has incredibly slow players.

It wouldn't have bothered me in the least in a slow round. In a fast round, no thanks.

It's like the argument against going back to the tee on a lost ball. It's BEST to do that on a packed course where nobody is going anywhere. It'll be impossible to lose position. By the time the player that went back's group finishes the hole, they'll be waiting on the next tee anyway.

I'm guessing that the 5th added on #10 didn't pay. Who would want to be that 5th guy, paying or not.

I bet phone guy didn't tell that guy he was a 5th. So did they stick the 5th guy riding with your other single?

If possible, my first choice would have been to skip ahead of the slow group in front of you, unless the course was full in front.

Another option was to play the front again.

The 2:45 and getting stuck with the distractions would have caused me to walk after 9, 5th guy or no.

Sorry to hear what should have been a fun day spoiled. And yes, just calling in some guy to make a fivesome without asking ahead was extremely discourteous.

Dinner with kids is always a great remedy for what ails me!

Good luck this weekend!

I would have done the same thing. Sorry it happened. Hope you're able to salvage your milestone day, Dave.

Dinner with the kids and a couple of great bottles of wine so it'll be a great day!

But...was it Costco wine to celebrate the milestone???

Whatever that milestone was, congratulations! Next time, call me and I'll find us a nice quiet golf course

Once you've endured a 7 hour round, not much gets to you anymore. I'd have stayed.

The slow pace would be the real reason I leave, but probably blame it on the 5th guy.
