The real question here is whether a 4 hdcp can take him!

Well, to be fair, a 4 probably could shoot 82 on a Tour course, so ... yeah. 😉

I'm not as concerned about the form of his game but rather his mental state right now. That guy looked like he had no interest being on the golf course yesterday some of which was backed up in this article.

The fact he didn’t give any time after the round speaks volumes

It just feels to me like there is more than a hand injury going on here. The article said he told the tournament yesterday he was withdrawing and didn’t even give a reason. Is he obligated too? No. Is it the respectful and right thing to do? That’s up for debate, but I say yes. Especially if it’s an injury. Easy enough to take 2 seconds and say “I’m battling an injury”. Hopefully he gets back on track.

Very strange. Seems like maybe something other than golf is got him acting/playing not so good?

Hahaha I mean, but for real ... he has to do SO MUCH re-routing in the downswing that it's always concerned me - and I like the kid - how consistently he can pull that off; especially under tour pressure.

Say what you will about Tony Finau's win record but I'm a total believer that the general simplicity of his swing is why he's always in the hunt. His lack of wins is totally mental and not mechanics.

Lol...he's made $5.7 million on the course (probably 2-3x that off) annnnnnnd he's 21. I'd say he's timing it A-OK.

Second, swing like Tony Finau? Matthew would hit it 50 yards shorter if he tried to swing like the freak athlete that is Tony Finau. Few people in the world have the luxury of being able to chip drivers 320 down the middle.

I honestly think he's working on a swing change to get less over the line at the top

His swing looks shorter like he’s trying to avoid hurting something (probably his hand injury from earlier). He probably figured since it’s a no cut event to try and see if he could play through it. It’ll be like Koepka and his knee/hip injury. Try to push through but physically can’t.

Also, to those who are saying swing like Finau. He already kinda does. They both swing within their limits by a wide margin.

Never had confidence in this guy. Quirky accurate swing? Ok. Quirky inaccurate power swing? Yikes. Plus his chipping action doesn’t look effective. He’s the polar opposite of someone like Furyk. The way he plays will be mentally exhausting. At best he’s gonna be a boom or bust kind of guy.

Poor wolff. I recall he was paired with Bryson last year at some point and was bombing it right up there if not past him. No question he has the goods even with that funky swing. I hope it’s just a minor injury and he’s not pulling a YJS and changing his swing from all these WXRer comments 😂

Deff has the goods, swing just has a bunch of timing issues. Guy like Morikawa operates his legs as gear #1 and moves them at constant speed to amplify power to the rest of the parts. Wolffs legs are the fastest gear and needs to constantly increase leg speed to sync up.

Just read an article that discusses the same thing.  Wolff has had some bigger scores even going back to Zozo, CJ Cup, and the Masters last year.  Perhaps an injury is exacerbating things but I suspect it’s something deeper...he probably got engaged or something...ha!

Was it Matt Every talking about one of his perceived 'meltdowns' losing lots of balls in the water who said - if I bailed out of the shot I would not learn anything. Possibly once Wolf mentally checks out the round he just gives it up as practice -

With WGC being a no cut event no point in grinding ruining your stats to get through Friday  - Probably felt he would be DFL regardless so why bother for the next 3 days for the same cash.

I believe that was on the final day of a little tournament called the, oh what was it... Oh yeah, the US Open. Wolff drove it far and folded like a cheap suit.

I like Wolff and really hope he gets it figured out. He's still young enough to make a change and it not have too big of an impact on his long term career.

I just hope he doesn't get into the habit of WDing every time he plays poorly. I've always hated the players who do that sort of thing. Just seems like a crybaby type move to me.

Another reminder of how the reach of Covid is hard to measure. Rick Schiels had a nice video at the onset of the UK's most recent shutdown on the mental health challenges with Covid and how golf can and should be a good relief. I imagine life is just as hard if not harder right now for Wolff than golf.

I hope it's an injury, not in the sense that I want him to be injured, but in the sense that this is a temporary compensation issue and not something more long term problematic.

And, about a month ago, they did do a comparison of his swing from last year and in that tourney, and it sure looked a lot shorter to me, and the announcers.  Granted, I'm not putting much stake in announcer analysis of golf swings but, still, this is something that isn't hard to identify from the naked eye in a side by side

Why would someone who relies on their health to make a living risk it by playing through injury? A golfer with a bad hand is like a pitcher with a bad elbow. You shut it down until it’s healed. It’s not like he is hurting for cash. It looks like he is just playing really bad golf. He might be having a little too much fun being a millionaire at 21 can do that to you. Maybe he resting on his laurels a bit. It happens. I’m sure he will be fine.
