Reasons to tell your wife when new golf clubs show up at the door?

I forgot to add in my last post.......

 

My son called me one night and told me that he ordered a Rogue driver and used my house for shipping thinking he'd pull a fast one.

 

MY wife and DIL are really close, so the secret lasted about 5-6 hours after the wife saw the box on the porch.

 

I had fun busting on him about it for a while.  😄

We had a long talk and anything under $50 we don't bother talking to each other about...

We're in no financial peril... But boy does she just LOSE it when I buy golf clubs... I had to warranty replace my SIM and she freaked out the day the SIM2 showed up this past summer. Got equally mad when I switched to a TSI3 and MADE money on selling the SIM2.

Not gonna lie, for a little while there whenever we'd have a dumb fight I'd wait for her to go to sleep and then order a new club to test/demo just to see her lose her s*** a few days later. She finally realized what I was doing and has calmed down a lot; so less fights and better communication means less clubs.

Did just trade my 8802 for a Scotty Classic and she took it in stride.

In all seriousness - I almost always sell clubs before buying new ones. So I make a point of boxing stuff up when she's home, then when new stuff comes in I just say I financed it by selling other clubs. If there happens to be a large price gap that I forget to mention, well...

First option - send golf clubs to my office if they aren't ordered through the course.

 

Second option - follow tracking and make sure they are secured before wife gets home from work.

 

She really doesn't care, but I like to have my little secrets, lol.  Surprisingly, nobody was on my side a few years ago when we were playing in couples league on a Friday night and it dawned on her, on the first hole no less, but more than a couple of weeks in, the AP2s in my bag seemed very "bright" and unblemished --- thank goodness it was alternate shot and made my suffering shorter than it otherwise may have been --- she really played it up, lol.

Tell her you got demoted and a pay decrease. Blame it on Covid and the economy etc...

 

Take the difference in cash between "your new salary" (wink) and your old one and start a new bank account

 

If there's anything MtlJeff has learned, it's that nothing bad comes from lying to women. They expect it frankly. And if they don't , they should know by now what the score is. I mean they're the ones who chose to be with me at the end of the day. Really on them at this point

sweated for 6 months before plucking up the courage to ask my wife if I could buy a sports car.  her reply was "cool - what colour are we getting".  after that I figure new golf clubs will be a cinch!

Must be a young guy problem, after 45 years with the wife the worst / best that can happen is she stops talking for a few days...7 wood just delivered and she just smiled.

She asked "is that your birthday present" nope just a club replacement, the birthday present is the set of Rogue irons I am about to order. 

 

Thinking about all the responses here, it is definitely a young man problem as we old guys don't care if they get pissed off, again it might be nice and quiet for a few days and well sex is not that big a deal anymore to use as a deterrent. Don't get me wrong we old guys aren't dead yet but we don't let it get in the way of new gear.

I'm in the same boat as you, but my wife never gets mad.  I've explained that this is my only outlet from working so she kind of allows me to spend a few bucks here and there and everywhere.

 

At some point does guilt enter into the picture because you've got all these clubs and you can only play 14?

I am not a club hoarder, once I decide it is not for me it is gone. I used to sell on ebay but since they changed their policy and demanded your bank account info I am out of that. Strange decision as they own Paypal (or did) and it worked perfectly. 

That is one of the reasons I play a Callaway bag presently, they are easy to deal with and give a fair price on trade in's. My way of looking at is if I buy a club and use it for any amount of time and get 50% for it that is a good deal to me, most of the time it is more than 50% but they need to make a profit to flip all those clubs and my mistakes are not their mistakes.

This topic is so funny to me. Ive been there and the way I break it down for my wife is that I am borrowing the clubs and usually end up selling them and moving on. Unlike the purses that sit in her closet in their fancy bags waiting for that day when they see sunlight, I try different clubs out and end up swapping clubs with other golfers out there.

Before the pandemic it was always “for every pair of shoes you buy, I order a club”. Doesn’t work so much until we are out of this.

That’s definitely not the case as I’m 36 and my wife couldn’t care less as long as the bills are paid. We have a joint account for bills and our own accounts for the rest. I’ve got non golfing friends with expensive hobbies and their wives are of the same opinion.
 

My experience from my home club is it’s the generations older than me that feel the need to hide clubs they’ve bought from their wife, but even then it’s only a few of them.

I think I can answer that: I wouldn't call it guilt, more like frustration!

 

I've, ummm, quite a few sets of irons, mostly old ones. I wish I could play more often. As it is, I swap in a new set each time I play, so I can rotate through a few sets in a year. However, I do have more than a year's supply of irons, so I am looking to get rid of a few. I'd like to get down to about 15 sets.

 

In my case, the wife isn't so bothered about the cost, because she now knows that most of these old irons I'm buying cost only a few thousand yen, but it's the space they take up that bothers her.
