Reasons to tell your wife when new golf clubs show up at the door?

Honestly, she doesn't ask any more.  As much golf and ski stuff come thru the door, the same amount goes back out.  She knows if I spend the money on something I wanted it and what I am not using will be sold and most of the time I either break even or come pretty darn close.

I'm sort of running out of reasons when explaining to my wife when new clubs show up at the door.

She's actually pretty calm about it and normally just says, "you can do what you want with your money".  But I still feel like I need a good reason for ordering new clubs just weeks after getting new clubs.

My most recent reason was, "the holiday sales price was too good to pass up".  But now the holidays are over so I'll need to save up some new reasons.

Not trying to go too deep but is there a reason why you feel guilty and need to come up with an excuse?

IE: Your wife doesn't buy a lot of things for herself, or you guys are tight on cash, or your stuff is starting to pile and cause a mess... I mean could be a lot.

Maybe take a step back to see why you have that feeling in the first place cause I think it's fine, if you have the means, to buy new stuff to try/have or whatever and don't necessarily need to feel compelled to explain myself.

If you make your own money, and the bills are paid, why do you need to justify anything? You bought em cause you want em.  The same should go the other way when she wants to buy stuff.

Easy

I'm gonna sell my old driver/wedge/irons which I can sell for $XXX so really this is only going to cost me $XXX.

She does know I'm pretty good with selling stuff.  Got a pre-owned Mavrik over the summer for like $225, just sold my Rogue with a shaft I had that I was never going to use for $150.

So I got the upgrade, kept the shaft that I liked and used with my Rogue AND got the Riptide shaft with the Mavrik that I have also taken a liking to.

I do mostly trades to offset the spend but sometimes not. She knows when I’m heading out so it’s not like it’s any surprise. I talk golf clubs with her a lot, lol.

Occasionally  I go into great detail as to how the club will fit into my grand plan. This can include my shaft analysis, value proposition of said purchase, it’s a better iteration of that club I loved in 2017 (Q: do you remember it? A: yes, you traded it after two months), or damn isn’t this a pretty club?

I really don’t have to say anything but gushing on about it once in a great while it just feels necessary.

She knows more about golf gear by osmosis than most guys I play with. Multiple failed experiments will do that.

She’s a good sport when it comes to this hobby. Definitely a keeper in all ways.

The bills are paid, I put my 22% into 401k, and some money into our savings account...I'll spend the money I earn how I see fit.

My wife and I never have this conversation because we're both adults that work for a living.  We don't tell each other how to spend the money we earn as long as our debt and savings obligations are met.

I don't really get the poking and prodding some people get. As long as the mortgage is being paid and your kids school bills etc are being paid, foods on the table etc...Why would you be upset someone is buying things. I don't get it. I know OP is kinda being tongue and cheek but some people really deal with this stuff.

The only thing i've learned is that don't openly talk about how much you're spending on golf clubs and then say you don't want to pay for new chairs or something. Because that'll get you a crook eye

Well with experience with my ex I made the bad call having my income all in one bank account. She was very manipulative about how I spent my money would always get complaints about wants and not need. So I get some situations. Now I find it's much simpler to keep financial things separate so I have control knowing what goes where. And since I do that it's no need to critique what I buy

Agree.  As long as I get my bills taken care of, my wife doesn't really get on my a** unless she sees I have a collection of shafts piling up in the bedroom.  We have had separate accounts and it's been working great so far.  You know they say that the number one reason that couples divorce is because of money issues.  This is why I don't argue with the missus about money.

I believe joint accounts were used as a method of torture back in the middle ages.
