Do you buy off RACK or always get fitted?

I have done both. I dont see a tremendous difference, but buying new sets each time to get fitted is costly. If money isn't a issue, of course you'd get fitted everytime. Has anyone bought standard off the rack and get the same results as your fitted clubs?

Once you know what you need/like, you can order off the rack as long as you or somebody you trust can do the club work.

I ordered my wedges off the rack and tossed in aftermarket shafts with no worries because I knew what grind/bounce I needed, and also what shafts. I'd maybe consider getting fit again if my swing/technique changes drastically; that goes for any club I guess really. I think driver may be the one exception since differences in head design can alter flight by quite a bit (something like a LST vs a Fusion MAX).

I got fitted in 2007. There was a pretty drastic difference in what I had (5i = 172 yds) and what the fitting results were (5i = 191 yds). And that was before the great loft progressions of the last 5 years - in was just the difference in shafts. I had a Project X 5.5, and switched to a standard Rifle 5.0. Been buying stuff based on that since, but I have made the switch to graphite.

Did a driver fitting a couple of months ago - they couldn't squeeze anything more out of what I have done myself.

I'd say get one good fitting so you know what does/doesn't work. That could last you a long time.

I was "fit" once and it was a waste of time and money. He had me hit 10 balls on a lie board and determined I was 2* upright but it didn't make much of a difference. Maybe he would have taken more time if I would have been interested in buying clubs from him. I'd like to get a full bag fitting but not sure who I'd go to. My bucket list is to get fit at TXG....

I typically go off the rack, especially for irons and wedges. I've done a couple basic fittings and I always come up pretty standard so that makes it easy. My most recent iron purchase was built to order for me by Usher Golf but I had my Miura CB57s built to US standard length and Miura standard loft and lie using TTDG S300 shafts.

I do notice some slight difference between my two sets of irons. The Miuras are 2* flatter lie angle than my Bridgestones....but I can play them both just fine. My guess is My ideal is maybe right in between the two and being 1* off either way doesn't make a huge enough difference for me to notice? Also the shafts are different. I get about the same length, maybe a little longer and slightly lower ball flight from the Miuras...some of that is maybe the head, some the shaft.

For woods it's not too different I just try out different shafts to find one that gives me good numbers and feels "right" to me. Other than that I tend to play them a little shorter, especially driver, so it's trimming and tweaking weight to get the SW right.

The biggest fit issue for me is grips, need to have midsize so I'm always swapping grips out to midsize on new clubs. I really don't feel like I can play adequately with standard size grips anymore. I'd take playing way flat or upright and/or long/short clubs as I feel I can adjust my swing to compensate okay....but grips, nope, nothing to adjust really. That is always what makes fittings seem less useful to me probably...they're always regular size grips and everything just feels off for me with those.

how many balls do you think should be hit to determine proper lie angle?

I personally think a static fitting would suffice for most hacks as they're usually all over the place on the face of the club. When one has better swing mechanics and hits it on the button more often, then a real fitting is suitable to squeeze every ounce of performance from the club.

What is the point of spending $2k on a set of JP Wedges with a grind that is customized just for you only to have its benefits dissipate if you flip the club through impact? You're better off using a SW from your local Goodwill.

I've been fit before, but by a shop that does it inside. I spent a lot of money on a new set of AP2 irons, and hated them on the course. The shaft was not a good fit for me.

I would like to do something like TXG, or Edel. Someone I would trust more, because watching their videos, they are very thorough and seem to really care what they put in your hands.

The Edel videos on here are really good.

I've never been fitted for clubs before buying but it's always been my impression that I am pretty much the prototype for off the rack clubs. I'm 5'10, 175 lbs and have a driver SS of about 95 mph and a straight hitter most of the time. Sometimes straight right or straight left but rarely a hook or fade most of the time. Regular shafts here I come!!! As I started to get more into the game recently I hooked up with a local independent fitter and I really liked him so I had him shorten my drivers and fairway woods, regripped a bunch of my clubs, repaired another one and recently, regripped my Dad's Wilson Staff blades and adjusted the lies and lofts for me after some testing. The were literally all over the place with lies and lofts off by as much as 3 degrees. So I was planning on getting a set of more blade like clubs from him later this summer, fully fitted after some sessions on the monitor after my trip out west, and now he up and announces he's moving about 8 hours east of here because business sucked here and he couldn't make a go of it. :scare2: . There are a couple of small local club professionals here and the big box stores and that's about it. The big box guys are a joke IMO and the couple of club pros I talked to definitely didn't give me the warm and fuzzies like my guy did.

So I may end up having to drive to Cornwall, 8 hours away, to get fitted but I'll get to it eventually.

I know what shafts are likely to fit me. I'll buy "off the rack" if the stock club is something that i know will work for me.

Driver that comes stock with a Matrix Black Tie? Usually works.....Irons that come with S300.....same

So i've bought off the rack before, but only because fittings have shown me what works

I've done iron fittings and came away hitting it worse than off the rack. Standard lie fits me fine. My barometer is my divots. If they are uniform on each side then I'm fine. I am a believer in getting on the launch monitor before buying a new driver.

It's been over 30 years since I've had irons in my bag that I wasn't fitted for, and nearly 20 since I had a driver that I wasn't fitted for. There hasn't been ANY club in my bag, including putters, that I wasn't fitted for in a long, long time, and I can't imagine why there would be.

I don't try to get used to pants or shirts that don't fit; I like them to be my size. I'm always amused at the number of people who post on threads like this who think "one size fits all" works in golf clubs, and that two people who are different heights, have different arm lengths, and so on, can use the same clubs equally well.

I've done a couple of driver fitting & 1 whole bag fitting, so, I pretty know my overall specs, so off the rack is fine & I'm handy enough to do my own work. Getting my stuff to fit me is pretty simple, as it's usually having to shorten shafts. Not so sure about swing weights all falling within my recommended D0, but I can use the online golf swing weight calculator to have some sort of idea.

Edit - forgot to mention... lie and loft issues, I've ordered the stuff already "done" to my desired specs or I can take it somewhere to get it done for me.

I've been fitted and gone off rack/bought here or on ebay. I think custom fitting can be overrated if you end up with a mediocre fitter. I also noticed dynamic fittings for lie were pretty iffy. My swing isnt consistent enough to hit a lie board the same on back-to-back days haha.

My scores didnt change with expensive custom fitted gear.

It has helped me find a comfortable shaft/lie angle combo when I order or search for new clubs though.

Iron fittings never did me much good until I figured out that not every manufacturer has the same standard lie. Turns out that that’s a really important piece of information that no one ever shared with me.

Getting my putter specs figured out has probably been the most important fitting I’ve had. I never buy a putter off the rack, anymore.

I been fitted in the past as standard, black dot, etc. Fortunately buying off the rack pretty much close to my fitting. I know my driver swing speed is around 105-110 usually. I usually get stiff-low torque.

I buy used because there is no way in hell I'd pay even half of what OEMs charge for new clubs. So I will probably never buy clubs fitted and built to my specs. I enjoy the game plenty with the standard, banged up stuff.

What I will do, and have done once with mediocre results, is get evaluated in a launch monitor to see, generally, what type of club suits my swing. There is plenty of information out there to make an informed decision once you know your launch monitor numbers. I'd just use this to find the used OTR club that comes closest to what I need.
