Wedges "Survey" - all in one place

Vater

Recommended Posts

Always interested to know which wedges folks are using - always zooming in on that for WITB, picking up on comments/mention of them, glancing at signatures on posts... So thought I'd try to bottle some of it up in one thread.

A. What wedges are you using (which also answers whether or not all your wedges match one another)?

B. Do your wedges match the maker of your irons? If not, what irons do you play?

C. Starting with your pitching wedge, what is the gapping of your wedges (which also answers how many wedges you play)?

D. What bounce/grind?

E. What shafts do you have in your wedges?

Here are the specifications on my wedges. All are Callaway:

  • MD3 48°/10 S-grind | KBS Tour R-flex 110 gram
  • MD3 54°/12 W-grind | KBS Tour R-flex 110 gram
  • MD4 54°/10 S-grind | DG Tour Issue.115 Wedge flex
  • MD4 58°/8 C-grind | DG Tour Issue.115 Wedge flex
  • MD-PM 60°/10 U-grind | KBS Tour V Wedge flex

The three bolded in blue are currently in my bag. In 54°, the S-grind replaced the W due to most courses in my area going to heavy sand; the W hung up too much. Next, the 58° replaced the 60°, which was hard to control on all but greenside shots.

My irons, shown below, are TE Exotics CB Pro Tungstens, which have a 38° 8i and a 42° 9i.

Gapping is 48-54-58. The 48° replaces both the 46° PW from my old iron set, and the 50° GW from my old Cleveland wedges. I also include my 9i in my wedge matrix for half and 3/4 swings to cover a couple of yardage gaps.

When new graphite shafted irons arrive, I likely will reshaft these in Recoil 80 or Recoil 95 shafts.

1. Cleveland pitching, gap, and sand wedge, Solus 720 ws 64°.

2. Yes and no.

3.  45/8, 50/10, 56/14, 64/? 64 is the smart sole/Callaway sure out style.

4. PW and DW are the stock Cleveland traction 85 steel, SW is stock TT Cleveland traction wedge flex. Possibly the same. Solus is some uniflex steel.

I'm seriously thinking of switching back to the Warrior custom golf 60° lob wedge, the rough at my home course is pretty thick and I'm thinking going back to a lower bounce/loft to help with that.

A. What wedges are you using (which also answers whether or not all your wedges match one another)?

Wedges crafted by @joey3108.

B. Do your wedges match the maker of your irons? If not, what irons do you play?

No.  Callaway Legacy Black. Srixon zx7s are out of the bag the past three weeks or so, not sure they'll get back in.  I have another set of "Stenson" irons with shafts that are no good for me (knew that when I bought them) I'm going to send to Joe for a different shaft than I currently have and see how those work as well.  Nothing seems to knock those irons out of the bag the past 5 years (kind of dumb to keep trying, lol).

C. Starting with your pitching wedge, what is the gapping of your wedges (which also answers how many wedges you play)?

50, 54, 58.

D. What bounce/grind?

Fairly level leading edge, can't remember the grinds, discussed what I needed with Joe he did the grinding for each wedge and they work! Bounce is basically medium, definitely not low.

E. What shafts do you have in your wedges?

Soft stepped black Pro Modus 3 Tour 105s.  Iron shafts are Recoil 95s in stiff.

A. Until 2021, was playing all Mizuno S18.  Still have S18 sand wedge, but added Vegas (VW-04 and VW-10) and a Yururi Gekku to the bag this year

B. Until 2021, irons matched as I had played Mizuno irons for years.  Now gaming Grindworks PR-202 irons.

C. PW 45*, then 48*, 52*, 54*, 58*.  Gaming 5 wedges to bring my distance gaps down to 10yds between clubs.

D. 8* (48* GW), 10* (52* GW and 58* LW), 12* (54* SW)

E. Until 2021 I gamed tour issues S400 in all my wedges.  The Vegas came with KBS (either Tour 120 FLT or Tour 105) and the Yururi has a Nippon 125 wedge shaft.  Not sure what direction I'll go, but I like the feel of the Tour 120 FLT and the Nippon, if I change from S400. The Tour 105 seems too light.

A.  Scratch 8620, Wilson Staff PMP, Callaway PM Grind 19

B.  Irons are Golden Ram Tour Grinds, the TW276 special edition set

C.  49* PW, 53* GW, 58* SW (Wilson and Callaway are alternated)

D.  PMP has 10* bounce, is their standard grind, fair amount of front to back camber, but not what I'd call an actual heel or trailing edge relief grind.  Callaway has the C Grind sole.  The Scratch has the DS (Driver Slider) grind option from the 8620 line

E.  Scratch has Steelfiber i125 S.  Wilson has a Dynamic S that I had from an old Ram Tom Watson wedge.  PM Grind has KBS Hi-Rev 2.0

A. PW is a Mizuno MP25 at 46 degrees, then I go 50.12, 56.14 and 58.10 (F, F, S) in SM6's

B. No - MP25's in 4-PW then SM6's. Modus 105 S in the irons, KBS Tour V 120 X in the wedges

C. PW - 136, GW - 120, SW - 105, LW - 90. I'll happily use 50 and 56 anywhere from <10 to 100. 58 is mainly for short-sided shots

D. and E. As above

A. PW is Cobra AMP Forged (matches set - 45°), Callaway MD3 W Grind (52°), Callaway MD2 U Grind (58°)

B. PW matches set, 52/58 degree wedges do not.

C. 45/52/58 -- Used to have 45/50/54/58. Hated my 54 degree wedge and never used it for 2 years and so I dropped the 50 and 54 and made it a 58. Never felt like I was missing a wedge so I get another club for the top end of the bag. -- 45 is about 130-100. 52 is 100-80. 58 is 80 and below. 52/58 used around the greens with 58 when I need a shorter roll/bunker shots.

D. 45 is iron set. 52°/11° W Grind -- 58°/10° U Grind.

E. PW has KBS Tour Stiff, 52/58 have True Temper Dynamic Gold wedge.

Only having 3 wedges lets me carry both a Utility Iron and a Hybrid. I like the Utility off the tee and out of the rough. Hybrid is nice when I need a higher flight or off a tie fairway lie.
