What’s the Worst Feeling in Golf?

Honeybadger

Mine is the off season coming to an end, and I can't play because I've strained my back somehow. I'm at the skill level where a bad shot is just as likely to happen as a good shot so those are just a part of the game, but not being able to play because I've hurt myself, with no idea how, is terrible.

Ripped driver over the netting into a 4 lane road of rush hour traffic last week. That felt pretty miserable until a minute passed w no screeches, crashes, or cars flying into the parking lot.

Could not have been luckier

Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snake bite and furthermore, always carry a small snake.

Messing up a personal milestone for a dumb reason.  Happened just a couple weeks ago to me- Needed bogey on 18 for my first ever even-par 9.  18 was a 430yd par 4 with a forced carry over water approach.  Took 6i instead of 5i for my approach and hit the bank and rolled in the water.  Took 9i instead of PW to hit my fourth because I was scared of the distance, promptly hit it 10yds past the green.  Up and down for double and a 37 on that 9.  Oh well.

Reading your buddies text threads as they set up the big weekend game while you are out of commision from surgery for the next 4-6 weeks.

Also, getting the bill from your club when you haven't set foot on the property in a month for the same reason.

Thankfully, the bar renovation is almost done so I will at least have a place to cry into my beer soon ...

Finding your ball after 4 mins and 55 seconds, flagging your iron to 3 feet, walking all the way to the green and realizing that you hit the wrong ball, then walking 459 yards back to the tee box past the group in the fairway to a tee box with 2 other groups waiting for you to get on with it, then pulling your drive (now your 5th shot even though you’ve only hit your ball once so far)right where the first shot went and finding your original bell 4 yards away from where you hit the wrong ball.

That was my worst feeling in golf... 😔

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

The worst feeling(s) for me were:

1: When I pulled into a parking spot at the golf course, got out of my truck and asked myself "why am I here"?

2:  On another occasion; leaving the course after playing, walking through the parking lot and wondering why I just wasted the time and money playing.

Playing fantastic from tee to green and being completely lost on the putting greens. Despair sets in real quick when this happens.

I played Brora GC in Northern Scotland as a tune-up round for Dornoch a few years back. Incredibly hungover, some might even say devastatingly so. We debated pulling chute immediately pre-round but somehow found the courage to face the elements, which are significant at the best of times at Brora.

Anyway, even keel start. Caddie gained confidence in me, which in my experience can be a tall order in itself. Rattled off a birdie-birdie stretch. OK, this thing is coming together somehow. Next hole is a blind uphill par 4. Drain the approach for an eagle. Very uncomfortable being this hot. I am a "decent" player but generally rattle off pars, not birds and eagles.

I somehow birdie the next, a short par 4. My caddie tries not to tip me off, but I overhear that the course record is in jeopardy.

We arrive at the 18th, an uphill, 200 yard par 3. Not entirely sure what is happening at this point. I've never gone this deep. So I triple it.

For me, that was the worst feeling at the time. So close to a lifelong goal, only to screw the pooch on a challenging but entirely reasonable hole. And in retrospect, it's probably the best lesson I've had in golf. This s*** is hard.

At the 8th hole of one of our local courses I hit a long and straight drive right down the middle. The shot of the day! I was 97 yards from the green, and I proceed to take six shots from there! I was so pissed off at myself for wasting such a great drive. I swear that if I had a gun I would have blown my brains out!

My worst feeling, ever?

Missing a 3' straight uphill putt to send Maddie and I to the Open Mixed BB Nationals in Vegas. It was basically the last putt of my competitive career cuz that was when I was diagnosed with my first bout of cancer, then the stroke, then more cancer, yada yada yada . Ironically, it came two weeks after my greatest feeling ever in the game, when I beat a future USGA Champion in the Semis of a Major MP event(I would win the tourney the next day though the finals were anti-climatic).

Not a week goes by that I don't replay that friggin putt in my mind's eye👁.

Oh well, it's a humbling game

Cheers🍻

RP

Walking up to a chip knowing that you're going to yip it. That's comfortably the worst. The sharp clack sound of ball on hosel is pretty bad too, but it's nowhere close to the upcoming yip dread.
