What’s the Worst Feeling in Golf?

A one-time worst feeling.

 

Playing on road in local amateur circuit. No. 2 hole was 370 yards long and severely uphill to landing area. My tee shot landed on left edge of fairway and skittered into rough. Walked up to right of tree where ball was heading... looked around in the rough, we couldn't find it - lost ball!

 

Playing partners stay at top, I go back down and hit another drive, pretty much the same line. Partners spotted second drive for me. As I walk up to second shot, and knock a 7i up onto the green. I look three feet to my right, and there's the first ball in a small hole covered with grass tuft.

 

I then walked up to the green and had two putts for... a regulation double bogie!

From recent experience, making triples without any penalty shots is quite painful. I made two yesterday. One from 100 yards in the middle of the fairway. 400 yard par four downhill downwind. Three wood to 100 yards out, then misjudge the wind and dump it in the front bunker. Plugged. Dig it out over the green, then flub the chip and three putts later. 7. From the middle of the fairway. JFSMN.

I hit plenty of tops off the tee box in front of people, duffs in the fairway and around the greens, skulling them out of bunkers into other bunkers, but the angriest I EVER get on the golf course is the 4-putt double bogey.  #2 would be the 3-putt bogey from inside 15 feet.  Nothing irritates me more than putting poorly.  I could have a complete s*** swing that day and barely break 100, but as long as I'm make a few 10-20 footers and not missing any shorties, I am having a good time.

Also, another thing, I don't get mad if I miss a putt from a misread. If I stroked it well, I am usually very content with the outcome.  It's when I pull or push a 3-footer or run a 15 footer 6 feet passed the hole that drives me absolutely bonkers.

I'm back in the game after a long layoff, and for nearly the first year I was terrified of driver. I had a 20 year old small-headed driver on a longer-than-necessary steel shaft, and I could hit it well once out of ten tries. So I buy a new [used] driver from a buddy and I feel confident with it.

 

Hole #9 at my usual course is a short (317y) par 4, where you need to either get driver to get over a creek ~220-230 out or lay up with a 8i-PW depending on tee location and leave a long second shot. So I FINALLY take driver, something I've been terrified to do on this hole. 

 

I hit it, and it's not the best strike, heading a bit left, DIRECTLY on line for the cart path. Find the ball 15 yards short of the green [cart path assist for the win!] with a perfect lie, and I feel like birdie is in play. 

 

And I chunk the chip 8 feet. Hit my next chip 20 feet past the hole. 

 

Faced with a slippery breaking downhill 20-footer to save par, I stroke it DAMN perfect with speed that it just dies and drops right in the cup.

If your swing is out of sync, setting up to a ball with a mid or long iron in hand and just feeling zero zonfidence that you will make this shot, having no belief in your ball striking capabilities to keep the ball in play.

For me it is the very rare instance where I’m tracking my shot as it’s making its way to hitting a house.  Doesn’t happen very often but I’ve done it.  I did it late last year on the second shot into the opening hole (par 5) and the ball hit the side of a house and bounced back in play.  The owner was outside and we looked at the stucco finish and didn’t see an impact mark.  I gave him my phone number and told him if there was any damage I would pay to have it fixed.  There was no damage but he appreciated that.  Karma must have been good because I had a really good round.

For me, it was making a beautiful hole-in-one when I was playing alone.  No witnesses, no money from the hole-in-one club at my course, and can't even post the score.  BUMMER !!!   Oh...on regular days of golf, it's shanking an obviously simple looking chip.

Ive known them all well at one time or another.

 

This is why I intentionally strike my wedges on the toe in certain situations, have a 4 degree open driver, and have a putting stance bordering on whatever the hell you call that thing Michelle Wie was doing from inside of 10 feet on some days.

Shanking.... Without doubt the worse feeling in the game. You can have bad shots, holes etc but at least you're still playing the game you love..... Golfers have quite over the shanks and it's should destroying, you can solve it but it scrambles your mind like nothing else in golf
