What is makes your bag an unorthodox/quirky set-up?

I play GI clubs.  Can't get any more quirky than that while hanging out on GolfWRX.  Oh, and I hate Titlist balls too.

I'll go one further.  I hate everything made by them.  I have NEVER played their balls, started when I was a kid.  I was playing Maxfli HT, Precept EV ES, Z balata, Tour Edition, anything but theirs.   I never liked their drivers, all the other kids were playing 975 I was playing my GBB and Greatest and then TM R510TP.  Once I got into the golf industry I had a few experiences that made me never want to purchase one of their clubs, I have never even stroked or put my hands on the grip of a Scotty.  My trying to find a 3 wood was @Duffner's Waggle bad, which is why I have a 4 wood and 7 wood from them but refuse to name them in my signature.  Of course I bought both used, because sending them my money directly or for a new club I would view as an assault on my character.  LOL

My setup isn't strange that anyone would notice other than being a hard swinger and playing all graphite through out my entire set. 7 iron down to PW are all 1/4" gappings(wedges all the same).  7 Iron up are 3/8" gappings.  I play a 2 iron, which isn't weird on WRX, but is in the wild.

I like really, really heavy clubs.

-My irons are covered in lead tape.

-My putters are always 380-420g

-Currently my driver is a head designed to play in a 44.5 setup, except plays at 45.5 with a heavier shaft and also lead tape. I don't think it's swingweight is even on the chart.

Playing all graphite shafts, three 8 irons (29* T400, 33* T300, 38* AP2), followed by 24* and 27* hybrids, a 7 wood and a mini driver all with JumboMax XL grips.  I'm trying to make the bag as easy as possible to play and it has resulted in some relatively unique selections which I would partially attribute to my index going from 20 to 13 this year.

I meant to ask the last time I quoted your post, but what have you found the durability on the Jumbomax to be like? Someone made a comparison of them to Winn Dri-tac's which brought back memories of having to throw on a new Winn every 5 rounds because it had the durability of a cattail.

If we take a "standard" set to be 1w, 3w, 5w, then 4i-9i, PW, and putter...my set is 1w, 4w, 4h, 5-9i, and 5 wedges.  Because of the modern lofts though (comparing my G400s to classic Ping Zings or Eyes), I basically treat my G400 PW as a 9 iron...the Zing 2 9i is 42.7 while the G400 W is 42.5°.

Is that related to having a hockey background?

No, i've just always had a hard time keeping the putter on plane on short putts. And then for the other clubs probably because i always used Ping G irons, and these played VERY light IMO. So to get them to feel more normal i would lead tape them. Heavier stuff just grew on me basically

I game 2 drivers and no 3W:  10.5* (TS3), and a 12* (917D2) which I consider a 2W. I never hit 3W off the deck, and am more consistent with the bigger face of the 2W off the tee.

The 12* has a shorter and heavier (Graphite Design XC 7X) shaft.  I get higher launch, less roll and can turn this driver over if I want to.   My default shot shape with my 10.5* is a baby cut, and it sets up well to hit low rolling shots into the wind.

I've been using this type of setup for a few years.  Lets me take advantage of doglegs in either direction, or effectively play with or into the wind.  I get to hit "driver" more often, have more wedges in my hands on approach shots, and my avg score has dropped a few strokes.  Fun stuff...

I have a bud of mine that has had a J-33 3 wood so long his bag rubbed through the shaft and it almost broke. Of course he could not readily find a NVS 65 Green for it. But guess who salvaged one from the junkpile clubs? Yep I put it in for him and gave him a sock cover that protects the shaft. Got to laughing thinking about it. These new shorty leather covers look nice but do not protect graphite shafts from bag rub. Then I really got to thinking hardly no one carries the same 3 wood for 15 years either.

All my clubs are graphite including stroke lab putter

All clubs have  lead tape except for the putter

grips have 3 extra wraps under lower hand almost zero taper

wedges are gapped 50,56,60. 56 gets used the most from 105 in which feels most comfortable for me.  56 will definitely wear out and be replaced faster than the rest of the set

I've certainly dabbled with just about the oddest possible setups, but right now my bag is somewhat normal.  I'd say the two weirdest things about my bag are the 48" driver, the inclusion of either a 2nd driver or a mini driver, and then my yardage gaps, which are not consistent by generally accepted norms.

I've got a pretty normal bag at first glance. Some newer stuff, a lot of older stuff, but generally speaking it's a typical "skilled amateur" setup with traditional gaps.

But...my shafts are all over the place. That's what happens when you buy used (for the most part) and just don't care that much.

I've got light. I've got heavy. I've got stiff, x-stiff, and regular. Aftermarket and stock. It's really quite a mess.

But, somehow they still get me around the golf course.

Oh yeah, and my 0* bounce 58* wedge. Such a wonderful club.

Not sure my bag is too crazy but recently made the switch to 'old school' lofts. I got tired of having a large gap between my 5w and 4i to carry a gap wedge. This is all based on the modern 46* PW so I went old school. 20* 3i with 4 degree gaps to a 44*, 49 PW, 54 SW, 60 LW. I find this gapping to be more consistent throughout the bag.

I'm going to try an almost iron-less bag. So driver, 5w, then 4-7 hybrid. I love the 7H, and yesterday hit it a few times choked down and partial swing for what would typically be about a 9i shot. Love my 55 and 60 Eye2 wedges, so going to add a CBX2 48* and an XL Halo 9i to finish things. Will be 11 clubs, but actually can go 10 by changing loft on either the 5H or 6H and using one or the other.

Back when I was young and strong I did the opposite; 3W and then 1-SW (Palmer Peerless.)  I could hit the 1 iron 230 or so and I didn't need more distance than that for most holes.

Similar story - some decades back with a young back I carried a wooden 2W, then 1i and 3-PW and a putter. The 1i was mostly a tee club as I was never sure what zip code the wood was heading to. But I could hit the 1i usually dead straight about 220. Those days are long gone though...

No fairway woods for me as I can't hit them. So it's driver, 3H & 4H, 5-PW, 52 & 56, putter for me.

I guess the quirky part of my bag is the driver & hybrids are newer tech but then I'm carrying irons that came out in 1999. And I have no idea how old my putter is as I can't find a release date or any info about it online. But it's working for me so far.

weirdly, I have a preference for high lofts. Mentally it helps me get the ball in the air...

My driver is a 12 degree and my fittings have always produced numbers that were better than 10.5 degree models.

I use a 5 wood (17.5 degrees) with a 3 wood length shaft for my 1st wood.

I use a 7 wood (20.5 degrees) with a 5 wood length shaft for my 2nd wood.

I use a 5 hybrid (25 or 26 degree) as my only hybrid (4 iron replacement).

My 5-GW iron set up are Ping Retro Spec (27 degree 5 iron)

Wedges are a standard 56 sand wedge, with a 64 degree lob.

The club in my bag that gets the most use (aside from the putter) is the 64 degree wedge

3 iron - bent 1 degree weak

5 - 9 iron (5 iron bent 1 degree strong)

60M

The 54 was for chipping and the 56 for bunkers.

It might have worked had the AP2’s not been dreadful

I guess what's most unorthodox about my bag is that it isn't really unorthodox in any way, which is an extremely rare thing around these parts.

I do enjoy reading about all these setups though.  Amazing how many different solutions there can be to what is essentially the same problem.  If I saw a lot of these bags out in the wild, I would probably roll my eyes, but I know that all you boys have put (probably way too much) time into these setups.

58 and 60 degree wedges (high bounce 58, low bounce 60).  I bend my irons weak in the short irons to give me a 48* PW and 5* gaps between the 6, 7, 8 irons.  I usually play a 2 hybrid instead of a  fairway wood.
