Favorite Wedge????

I am in th emarket for a new wedge and currently play a Vokey......its been fine, but i may be looking for another wedge that feels a little better and creates a bit more spin. Would like a nice classic shape like the vokey....any suggestions?

Haven’t seen a better looking, higher spinning, better feeling wedge than the RTX Zipcore! I’ve got a 50, 52, 54, and 58, and I’m sticking more shots within 10ft from the hole than ever before…they’re suuuuper smooth!

sweet.....did you have anything prior? how do they compare?

I have to say, among the skilled people I play with it is hard to find a wedge without BV stamped on it. I personally branched out for a bit, but as far as looking for more spin I don't think you'll have much success. Maybe try the BV raw through the custom shop, which is what I'm currently rocking. If you're looking for feel, one of my staff friends plays Miura wedges and they're the sweetest things I've ever hit.

I currently use Vokey SM8s -- chose them because they offer the specific bounce/grind options I was looking for, and don't regret the decision. But prior to that I was playing Cleveland RTX 4s, and got a little bit more spin out of them. Same specs in terms of length/loft/lie/shaft. That might be unique to me, who knows. But based on my experience, I'd think the Zipcores, which are the new generation of my old RTX 4s, would be worth a look.

would love a good review of the Edel SMS wedges -- maybe its the marketing, but the movable weights are really intriguing to me

Cleveland RTX is  more forgiving on slight mishits than Vokey.  I've tried Vokey wedges, including various sole grind options, but have always found them to be too penalizing for a slight mishit. For wedge play from less than ideal lies slight mishits will happen.

If I had to rank just purely based on preference and my game, what I have played in the past it would be:

 

1. Current Gamers Ping glide 2.0 Stealth (great when precision is needed around the green and some forgiveness on full/feel shots)

2. Cleveland RTX 4 (loved the shape, money out of the bunker, classic, have always loved Cleveland wedges)

3. Vokey SM6,7,8 (money around the green, 54 S grind was my scalpel, not great on half, TQ, full swings for me)

4. Callaway Jaws (just meh)

My previous wedges were TM Milled Grind (OG’s). To me the Zipcore’s have much better feel and better control on partial swings…not even close in my opinion.

Have you thought of playing a graphite shaft? It reduces the shanks considerably.

Vokey 56.14 F grind is my favorite. 

 

Trying the MG2 TW 60* out and really like it so far. Might have to swap out the s400 bc it’s so heavy but it does create a ton of spin. Easy to manipulate to hit half shots and spinners, but also good on full shots

best combination of soft feel, accuracy and forgiveness 

 

May not be breaking records in any one individual category, but is the consistently highest performer all around for my game.

I’m with @BallerNate et al, go with Zipcore. I’ve had the mid grind 56 & 60 in the bag all season. (and I’m a wedge ho) The Mid bounce V-sole is so versatile, it’s got all the shots and is quite easy to control trajectory & spin. I might add 56 Full and 60 Low, to cover very soft & very firm conditions; or a full face 64 just for fun.

I'd stick with your current Vokey's and I'll explain why.

 

I played Vokey's my entire golfing life until about 2 years ago.  Then I went on a never-ending wedge experiment.  I've spent the past 2 years playing different wedges with different grinds.  I'm not talking about hitting some balls on the range or playing a few rounds with a different wedge, I'm talking about 6-12 month periods of time to really get to know these clubs.

 

First stop was Cleveland RTX's.  Next up was TM Milled Grinds.  Neither was as good for me for whatever reason.  Then I spent almost 12 months with Mizuno's.

 

For the past 6 months I've been gaming a Callaway combo of Jaws and PM Grind.  I do like the Callaways but I'm about to go back to Vokey's and end the experiment.

 

And regarding spin, nothing has ever spun as well for me as my old Vokey SM4 56/14.

Yeah, the control and feel is incredible! I’m going to add a 60* Low most likely too just to try a different option…can’t have too many Zipcores!! 😁

Am I the only person who finds Vokeys to be much heavier than Clevelands?

I picked up a DCI 962 LW that is better than any wedge I've ever had. It feels light but the overall weight is not actually.

I agree 💯 tried the Cleveland but went back to Vokey because I just liked the heavier weight

I just left the SM8's for the new RTX FullFace Zipcore 52* and 58* as to me they feel much better and easier to control.

I've just picked up the TaylorMade MG2 TW grind in a 56 and it's a fantastic wedge - classic shape, decent feel and plenty of check. 

 

I always swore by Nike wedges - and if I could have found a brand new Engage I would have gone with that, but I'm finding this an excellent substitute. It's effectively an Engage Dual Sole, but available new.

If you are looking for additional spin.  Zipcore are hard to beat, with a traditional look and a ton of options.

I played raw sm8 last year which had good performance.  I liked them but did not love them.  Tested T20 and really liked then but never pulled the trigger for whatever reason.  
 

Right now I have the new Honma wedges in the bag and they are pretty fantastic!  Feel so solid and dense and the soles just work really well for me.  Spin plenty as well.  As good as anything I’ve ever played.  A little more compact at address too.

I have tried TM and Callaway Jaws - both lacked feel, I'm not sure if they are even forged.

 

I have a 48 degree Cleveland RTX in the bag. The shaft is the length of my 46 degree and it plays clunky and has no feel.

I play a Vokey 60 SM8  and a 52 Vokey.

 

In short nothing has the feel and feedback of Vokey wedges.

If you're not adverse to dropping coin on a wedge, I would receommend the Miura line of wedges whether it be the Tour, HB or K-grind depending on what you need.  Feel way better than the Vokeys and has that classic look to them.  I always say that nothing feels like a Miura.  MIzuno is very underrated in the wedge department but feel better and softer than the Vokey and perform just as well.
