What wedge drove you away from Vokey?

It hasn’t driven me away yet, but I really like the look of the new Ping Glide Forged Pro. I’ve been thinking of changing my wedge lofts and if I do, I might give them a try.

More or less a wedge is a wedge for me from the big OEM's.  I don't find their grinds to be vastly all that different or game changing.  Feel is subjective, tho never wanted a 'buttery feeling' wedge as imho that gives less feedback.

Im in this boat. Had various wedges from all different oems and provided the bounce and sole is a good fit they all perform similar to me

For years I gamed Cleveland wedges and Mizuno irons.  Vokeys replaced the Clevelands about 10 years ago.

Then I came across a steal on a Mizuno S18 (54* high bounce SW).  I preferred the feel of the S18 and was more consistent with it.  Same result when I added a 50* and 58* S18, relegating the Vokeys to the backup bag.

The 50* and 58* S18 are now up at Dad's house in that spare bag (don't like to travel with my clubs), replaced by Vega wedges. But nothing has kicked that original 54* S18 out of my regular bag.

The SM6 Vokeys that were replaced by the S18s are now up in NJ in the bag at my buddy's house...

On a quiet day at the weekly fitting day at Bayonet a couple of years ago I was allowed to grab a bunch of wedges from all the big names and compare them on a full range of shots. Totally to my surprise, the Callaway md4 was far and away the best fit for me (s grind).

I've hit friends Vokey's but I didn't see anything special.

I get why the tour players love them, shoot they make so many beefier models for their tour van folks to custom grind them for the tour players.  Their off the rack models I have tried from friends just aren't my cup of tea.  Their forged and cast models are all 8620, and to be honest other than tour players most am's won't notice the difference since they are the same metal.

I played Cleveland growing up and still play either them or Callaway's(RC went to them for wedge design).  Currently the Cleveland grinds in mid fit my game better than any others I have tried.  I have not tried Pings yet, but have heard good things about them.

Another vote for Ping Glides.

I have the 50° in the standard sole grind and 54/58° in the Eye2 grind. I honestly

thought I made a mistake buying the Eye2 grind in the 58°  . The sole and face are a larger profile than what I’m used to but I’ve found them to be very workable. I also use the 58° for full swing shots. It’s deadly accurate 85 yards out.

The 50° gap wedge performs so well I’ll probably buy a 46* to replace the set wedge.

Sub70 wedges are $105 and I like to replace my wedges every 2 years or so…

Only Reason I’d go back to a big OEM would be for stamping.

I've always like Vokey's and played them more than any other wedge but this year I went with Cleveland RTX Full Face Zipcore. So far nothing over whelming but still just as nice as the Vokey's were.

I switched from Vokeys to PXG forged wedges, but I think the real reason I prefer them is I matched the shafts to my set for the first time.

Ping Glide 3.0 wedges have been amazing. I have the 50, 54, 58 and the distance control and feel have been stellar,

I agree. Have the same setup and love them. I was a long time Vokey player but have also played Cleveland and Callaway and these Pings have been my fav.

The title assumes everyone started with Vokey, and then somehow defected?

I have tried Vokey wedges, and even had a rough fitting one time. But, Vokeys are just not for me. I admire the technology, but I just don't play them.

Vokey SM5s drove me away from Vokey.  Played the 588 copycat 200 Series forever, best Vokeys ever.  After the rules change I finally got onboard with the SM5s, which were seriously meh.  Didn't care for the feel and of course not even close to the square groove spin.  Tried all the major brands after that, switched to the Cally MD3s and have never looked back.

I've been playing the OG PM Grinds, but the new Jaws Full Toe is going to knock those out easily.  The Jaws Raw Face and offset Groove in Groove have so much grip it's unbelievable.  Maybe better then the old square grooves and a masterpiece from the OG Wedge Master, Roger Cleveland.

Haven't had a Vokey in my bag since mid 20's so looooong time ago.  I think they are overrated.  Moved onto Jaws, Scratch, then Miura.  JDM wedges are king, IMO.

I’m an off again, on again Vokey user.  Played sm4’s and really enjoyed them.  Moved to bridgestone’s for a couple

of years and loved the j15’s and j40’s.  Needed more sole options so ended up in sm8 raw when they came out.  Liked them and they performed great but did not LOVE them.  Tried md5’s and had the same experience as the sm8’s.

Most recently I moved to Honma’s in both irons and wedges and so far I have to say I’m very impressed.  Very solid feel, spins as good as anything and very compact which I like.  A lot has to do with sole design as it just works for me.

However I agree with @cgasucks.  A good player can make almost any wedge work.  I tested Wilson recently and came away impressed as well.  Just need to find what you like to look at and what works for your delivery.
