Golf records that are safe

I can think of two that are very safe (never to be broken!). And one likely safe.

1. Byron Nelson's 11 wins in a row and 18 wins in a season (both in the same year).

2. This one floored me. I heard Ian Baker Finch cite this at last weeks Charles Schwab Challenge. Of all the PGA Tour starts Ben Hogan made in his career he finished in the top three 50% of the time!!!!!!!!!

3. Jack Nicklaus 18 major wins. With Woods latest injury he will need 4 more majors to beat this record.  Currently 45 years old and unknown when he will be able to compete again.

Anyone else have some records of note that appear pretty safe?

Most PGA Tour wins by a left hander. Phil Mickelson 45. Next closest player. Bubba Watson 12.

Tiger made 142 consecutive cuts, a record I believe is as impressive as his 80 plus wins and, or, 15 Majors.

Talent pool is way better and bigger nowadays so 1 and 2 won't happen again.  I doubt Tiger will win 4 more majors.  Getting older and now he has the catastrophic injury to both legs.  I don't he'll be back until 2023.  I think Phil's win last week at the PGA at 50 will be safe for awhile although I expect that it will happen again within the next 50 years.

Would Tiger's major record not beat that from 2000 - 2009?

12 wins

10 top 5's

11 top 10's

I grant you not as many top 5's etc but 12 major wins in 10 years

It was more the 35 top 10 finishes out of 40 majors that impressed me the most.

That is consistency at the highest level.

Top 3 half the time --Impossible

I was somewhat skeptical too.  So I took a look.  According to the PGA Tour website, from 1932 to 1970, Mr. Hogan made 300 PGA Tour starts.  He finished in the top 3 135 times!  Not quite 50%, but 45% (135/300) is still incredible.  Mindboggling, in fact, over a nearly 40-year span.  The Hawk continues to impress.

Sampling of Other Notable Pros and Their Top 3 Records in PGA Tour Events:

  • Tiger: 36% (132/368)
  • Snead: 32% (188/585)
  • Nicklaus: 28% (167/586)
  • Mickelson: 17% (110/645)

What i meant was i'm not skeptical of Hogan doing it, i'm saying it's impossible for someone to do that now. So that record is safe for certain

Tiger's 3 US amateurs in a row. If anyone ever comes along again with that talent they won't stay amateur long enough to even attempt it.

Seve's 50 European Tour wins. Too much depth now to win on average 5 per year for 10 years, plus the lure of bigger purses Stateside.

Tigers 6 amatuer titles in 6 consecutive years

The 3 straight US Ams alone will be almost impossible to repeat. The amount of money available to a guy after just one is often too high to refuse, back to back titles now must be worth $15 million or more plus whatever they can make playing for prize money.

Nicklaus total of 1st, 2nd, and 3rds in majors- something like 57?  Crazy

Tiger winning 6 straight USGA National ams. 3 junior, 3 ams. I believe.  No one will touch that.

I heard a discussion on PGA Tour radio that Nicklaus was a total of something like 20-25 strokes away from having 30 majors.

Bobby Jones won 50% of professional majors he ever finished (or 47% he ever played), finished in the top 2 of 73% of professional majors he ever played.

What is more remarkable is that Jones won 7 of the 16 major national championships (US Open and British Open) played from 1923 to 1930, and he only played in 3 British Opens during that time period (won them all).  Also finished second in 3 of the US Opens during that period.  Amazing.

Edit:  I guess what I should have said was that from 1923 to 1930, Bobby Jones played in 8 US Opens, winning 4 and finishing second in 3.  During the same time period, he played in 3 British Opens, winning all 3.

Tiger's consecutive cut record has no chance of being broken, I doubt anyone even gets halfway.

I think the wins record, be it Snead/Tiger or wherever Tiger finishes won't be touched, along with the major record.
