So with the release of the handful of names I have began to wonder, what will happen with their sponsorships?  Bubba has a lifetime PING deal, Westwood with PING, UPS, etc.

Will those sponsorships continue or did they just forfeit club companies as well as everything else?

Has there been talks of a club deal on the Saudi league?

I simply don't know.  I haven't given anything much thought until this popped into my head...

I think it would be almost certain that there are get-outs in the contracts that will allow sponsors to re-evaluate their relationships with the players as you can almost be certain that there will be sponsors that will not wish for their name to be associated with Saudi money. As an example of that, Dustin Johnson is sponsored by RBC. When he has played the Saudi event, their logo has been completely absent from it’s usual sport on his sleeve. Clearly, they don’t want to be associated with the guys whilst they are playing over there. Now, I am sure that they will have some form of link to the country, dirty money eventually seeps into everything but we live in a world where being seen to do the right thing is more important than actually doing the right thing and I am certain that I a complicit in that as well as I sit here typing on my Chinese manufactured iPad and whatever else comes from less than 100% ethically sourced markets.

Pretty sure Phil proved that.  Callaway said he has a "Life time sponsorship" and that is now "on hold"  /cough cough

This is key, sponsons bailing on players because they won’t get time on TV/Media for their products/services to be seen.

Then sponsors not wanting to be seen involved with Saudi, that’s probably not as much an issue for many of them.

Now, the Saudis got

unlimited cash 💰 yo!

So, they could guarantee a player their sponsorship I suppose

But, I’m thinking the tour will figure out ways to shovel cash to the top-20 guys, certainly the top 10.

They need to get the #earner up to 20MM and the top 10 guys to 15-20MM.

Then with the fedex, the top guy can make like 35MM

Then another issue is that if you leave, and you can play on the PGA tour, and you’re just playing a limited schedule with very low ranked players, these events won’t gain enough points, and  you won’t be able to qualify for the majors.

Players that miss the cut at The Masters are paid at least 10k.

getting paid 10k to play August for 2 days seems like a decent haul to me. But keep in mind these guys are flying private jets, renting nice houses, bringing coaches, chefs, trainers, etc. 10K is losing money.

They have to play in a minimum number of tournaments to have sponsorships. Will Ping recognize the SGL? Even if they do, if Bubba is banned from the PGA Tour he likely won’t get enough tournaments.

Easy to mock this but at the end of the day, pro golfers like money.  And the Saudis have lots and lots of it.

I suspect the fields will be very weak in the beginning... then some of the big names will see guys who they could beat in their sleep winning $3million plus to play 75% as much golf with no cut line, and say.... "OK maybe I'll just play one or two..."

Exactly, its like fishing, sometimes you have to chum the water to get the bait fish to school up before the big whoppers get hungry and decide its easy picking

Of course they'll be there.....that's what pro golfers do......play golf for cash....

The whole "loss of sponsorship" concept seems flawed at best.  The players are doing the math (or at least their accountants and agents).  Most mid-tier guys would take a guaranteed $4-6 million each year, plus potential bonuses for wins, for the next three years with zero sponsorship deals.

The heavy hitters, most certainly their accountants and agents are doing the math.  At some point, the return on investment for time invested will peek the interest of the Top 20 players.  Sponsorship money may very well pale in comparison to what the SGL is willing to pay.

This isn't going to end tomorrow.  This will be a battle.

It’s losing sponsors plus your owgr points for majors. You can’t qualify for majors playing no pga tour events and just LIV events with super weak fields. Even if owgr recognizes the events, the points will stink.

But Eventually, I think the compromise will be what the top 20-30 guys want.

Play a full PGA Tour schedule that gets them ready for Players, Majors, Fedex cup.

But let’s them play 2 or 3 LIV events for some nice funny money grab.

But no events in the US.

No doubt. All of the majors pay the players that miss their respective cuts. Still nice to have that subsidy though. Always good to spend less regardless.

Well, desperate times call for…

I don’t know where the reserves came from. But what better thing to invest it on on than the assets that bring in the most money.

And wait a minute. The Saudis can throw money at players at bring down our national golf tour. But the tour can’t do the same thing to keep their own players?!

The commissioner and tour have pretty sweeping authority. The players aren’t going to argue with making more money.

They don’t have to just blatantly hand it out. They could do accelerators on earnings.

Too 5 on the money list get 2x their earning. Something like that.

And they could jack up the PIP and add more dopey bonuses.

Whatever they do, they have to pay the top players more. A lot more.

BUT, can the PGA Tour sustain that level of payout? What happens when that $300m is gone after 1 year of paying the top guys?  The Saudis can sustain that indefinitely.  The tour doesn't have the means to raise revenue enough to sustain that  model. TV contracts are bigger, yes, but that is solely due sports in general being about the only thing people will turn away from Netflix for. It isn't because viewership is increasing.  Demand for golf isn't growing.

Check this out.

“Exclusive: PGA Tour to launch guaranteed money events for top stars, team format possible

The PGA Tour plans to create a series of lucrative, international tournaments that will offer guaranteed money to the world’s best players, Golfweek can reveal.

The Tour intends to stage between four and six events annually outside of the United States, in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.”

Bubba was reported to part of the new Netflix - PGA Tour series (Drive to Survive style).

No chance he is going to be both on the Netflix series and the SGL.

Commissioner Greg Norman clarified that no pros will join the league as members this year, but said a full 48-player field will play the first event in June....

Ya, Phil could’ve just kept his mouth shut and he be playing in these big funny money events the PGA tour just announced.
